the question isn't how, it's more of a WHY. i mean, cmon, the rebel pilots (all except the y-wing pilot i think) don't have protection for there face. Ever watch mission to mars? the guy takes off his helmet in space, and his whole head freezes to ice. unless that belt that rebel pilots where that activates a shield around them...

Porkin thought his X-Wing could hold togeather, and continue in the fight. he didn't wanna get caught be them imperials either.

What would you do? Get tortured, or die.

Then there IS the small consideration of ejecting out over a target you are currently trying to blow to smithereens!

Would you bail out or try to keep flying if, say, you were in a fighter jet that currently was directly over ground-zero of a major nuke attack?

Methinks you would take your chances and attempt to keep it together and put a little distance between you and the target before jumping out.
