ok. this is sad. I work at chapters (A canadian book store, like Barnes and Noble) and a Used book store, but i still do not under that the LORD OF THE RINGS thing.

Is the hobbit the first? Why does it say on the other ones 1 out of 3, but then there's.. 4... Help :|

There are three novels that make up the Lord of the Rings sequence—

 

Tolkien wrote this triology 1954/55

 

The Fellowship of the Ring,

The Two Towers and

The Return of the King

 

Tolkien wrote The Hobbit 1937

There are many other books besides the trilogy and The Hobbit in LoTR-lore... However, the "trilogy" (as Grannen described, consisting of The Fellowship fo the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King) is really one big continuous story, which forms the story of The Lord of the Rings.. If you've watched The Fellowship of the Ring, you'll notice that the story didn't really end at all... and it was almost exactly how the book ended. The main focus of storyline is to destroy the One Ring, and thereby defeating Sauron and saving Middle Earth.

 

The Hobbit is a complete story within itself, which tells of the adventure of Bilbo Baggins and a company of dwarvs. The main focus was the goal of the dwarvs, which was to reclaim the Misty Mountains for them, as well as to drive out the dragon that resided there. The fact that Bilbo found a ring of power is, while important, not the main focus. It does, however, set up a nice background for The Lord of the Rings.

 

Aside from Gandalf, none of the main characters of The Hobbit are main characters in The Lord of the Rings.
