I think the only way out is the way you came in from, unless i missed something. To avoid the flames and stuff, you just need to float to the ceiling of the hall and you should avoid them.

Yup. Out by the flames. There doesn't seem to be any time limit which is good so take your time.

How do you take out the shields?

Are you in the shields room XC?

 

From the outside walls of the huge, cylinder-shaped room there are force-field protected beams with little red 'switch-looking' things just above them. Destroy the 'switch-looking' things, explosing the beams. Destroy the beams to take down the forcefield in the center of the room.

 

The next cinematic will take it from there, but prepare to die a couple times.
