min. system requirements must have been a joke

Owning an older computer, I knew I was taking a risk when I purchased Jedi Knight II. Imagine my delight when I saw that the minimum system requirments were actually below what I have:

Celeron 433mhz

192 Ram

16M ATI All in Wonder (PCI)

plenty of harddrive space

all in all, it's a system that's done me just fine. I recently completed Return to Castle Wolfenstein with only a few slowdown problems.

The first levels of Jedi Knight II played great, even faster and prettier than RTCW I'd say. Then I made it to the first section of the game that takes place "outside." Some of the stuttering, skipping, slowdown problems I experienced with RTCW were coming back to haunt me. But as soon as I got "indoors" again the gameplay got back up to par... too good to last I suppose.

I'm outside again now (level 5 I think) in an area with prisoners and AT-STs and the game has become unplayable. The amount of stuttering and skipping makes it impossible for me to keep anything lined up in my sights.

Of course, I made sure to turn off all other programs before playing Jedi Knight II (my system monitor shows less than 15 percent of the resources are being used), but I figured I'd try some of the other recommended troubleshooting tips. I replaced all of my drivers with the most up to date ones, and I lowered the settings to the "FASTEST" default (which should run on a computer that meets the minimum standards). All of this was in vain though, the game still runs like crap in this section, and I'm about ready to just put on a cheat code to wade through the sloppiness and get to the next level!

I guess my reason for posting this is, what's going on with my computer? Is there something I can do short of getting all new hardware to improve my performance, or is this game just too powerful for my system? If the latter is true, than I think it's kind of irresponsible to market a game that's not going to run as well as it needs to on a computer such as mine. Thanks.

Those places in the game are the same places where my computer slows way down. Granted, I have a beefier computer.

From what I've seen in the past, the minimum system requirements are just that. It's the bare minimum that you need to be able to execute the game. Now if you actually want to PLAY the game then you probably want something a little bit more... (actually a lot more if you want a superb gaming experience)

Just posting this since I didnt see what options you have running. Make sure you put it at the lowest resolution, 640x480, turn stuff like sound to low quality, turn texture details and such to low and 16bit. Turn dynamic lighting and marks on walls off. Look in the jk2config.cfg for simple items and set it to 1. There are some things that will help it run, might not look the best but most of these should help if you havent done it allready.

so i've learned...

>Why >not save yourself some bitterness and recriminations and buy >some new hardware?

if only it were that cheap and easy... no, actually i plan on building a new system with my student loan this fall, so modifying my current system would just be a waste of money and effort (i don't even have any agp slots... it's all pci, so i couldn't even buy a new video card now and transfer it later). the frustrating thing is that the game runs fine in the majority of areas, it's only those "outdoorsy" and too much going on areas that cause slowdown. it's okay, though, i used various cheats to get through the *****y section, and the jedi academy and narr shada levels so far haven't been a problem.
