Creating a MultiPlayer Server For Dummies

Hello Everyone...

I am new to the "MultiPlayer" genre and am looking for a quick and simple guide on setting up a server that me and my 6 friends can play on for Jedi Code.

When I go into MultiPlayer mode, I choose "Create Server" and then begin to make my selections and click "Begin", but for some reason, my server name doesn't appear in the "Master List" that my friends see when they go to join a server. I have a PIII 933mhz, Lan/Cable modem and am wondering how I can accomplish this...

I have no one else to turn too except to you guys cause it sounds like you guys have been doing this for years. What is the easiest way for a beginner to set-up a server for Jedi Code?

Thank you!:)

I'm having the exact same issue. I have attempted several times to start a server that is dedicated or not dedicated (so that I can play as well) and it starts, however, no one else can see it. I'm not behind a firewall and have checked and double checked my settings. Advanced options didn't seem to hold the key to my dilemma either. Any help for our situation would be greatly appreciated from all forum goers! Thanks!

I am almost in the same boat. I am new to JK2, but have been running game servers for quite a while now.

As far as seeing your server, I bet it is because it is not named. Once you click on "Create Server" and it takes you to the screen to set up the server options, look above the place where it has all the "HUMAN" listings for players. There is a spot for server name. Click on it and change the name. Then tell your friend to look for that name on the lists.

Hope it helps....

Thanks for the Reply Black... I have named my server servarl diffferent names, but they don't show up each time. Do I need to establish a Dedicated server if only me and my 2 friends want to play? I am having a hard time getting info on this subject

Thanks for the reply though... it is greatly appreciated!

I have found that it won't be listed on the internet if its not a dedicated server (if you are running a non-dedicated server it doesn't send your hearbeat to raven's multiplayer game server. if you are running dedicated, the way to fix this is covered in the server faq toward the top

Thanks Deathshead! So there is no way I can host a server with my two friends unless it is a dedicated server?! Don't you need to have two computers to have a dedicated server because the perfomance will be slow if you try to play on your own server?

If that is the case, I don't know why they give you the option of choosing a ded- or non-dedicated server.

OK I've been able to host a non-dedicated server for 4 of my friends and 4 bots (fort FFA and CTF)Anyway when you've started your server, your friends need to goto the sever select screen and where it says INTERNET they need to change it to FAVORITES

Then ADD FAVAORITE and enter your machines IP address =)

Then in the lis when they refresh it should list your ip address and stuff =)

Hopefully that helps

Related or Not here I come.. If not at least food for thought.

When you set up a dedicated server, name it, and add all the goodies so that it's ready to rock and roll, once started it IS a new server and could take upto 30-45 minutes to show up on gamespy and all other game servers.

OK... I found out the number for my IP address and then created a server with the "Create Server" option. I had a friend go and select the "Join" server, then "Favorites" then "Add Favorite" and finally had him enter my IP address. He stated that a server came up with my address but it wasn't mine as I was using a Free-for-all game and the one he saw was a dueling server. Any suggestions? I am hooked up to a router so do you think that is giving me a wrong IP address or throwing it off?

Create a server making the dedicated server option INTERNET.

After you set up your server options(Name, force, players,etc..),

click begin.

This should reduce the program to a console(looks like DOS almost).

Begin another game (Start-Programs-Lucasarts-etc.)or shortcut.

Begin multiplayer game.

Join server.

Make sure you are set to INTERNET.

Refresh server list.

The name of your server should now be in the list.

Click on your server and join!

This is how I did it after a week of trying.

Also, you must be running from a cable modem to run a

dedicated server

(at least the game box says so).

I do and haven't had any problems.

you need to make sure that ports 28060 to 28062 are fowarded to appear on the internet in game browser and for your friend to join you need to forward ports 28070-28081. hope this helps. make sure these are fowarded on your router.

I don't know what your problem is. Ignore all the other threads. I have a NON-dedicated server that I host as public, not just for friends.

However, I use a 3rd party program called All-Seeing Eye. Its a game browser software program that supports almost every game (I also use it for RTCW) - and it has the option to create a game from there.

When I run my game, I alt-tab to ASE and there it is - Scooby Server T/FFA (Saber/Pistol Only).

And I know ppl who have connected that don't even know what ASE is, so I must go somewhere else to. You just have to make sure its not set to a private server somewhere, and that its visible to public!

The only prob I have is getting to display that cool motd (Eg. <g_motd "Welcome to my server....">) on the load up screen.... if anyone can help with that?:lsduel:
