ExcaliburDragon
I've addressed this in another thread (that a lot of folks have apparently looked at...), but I'm wondering if my posting had too much information for most people to really work through. So I thought I'd repost a much smaller version, and see if this helps. Basically, with all details stripped, the game will not load beyond the menu screens. The game exits to desktop, with a JK2 console open sporting the error "unsupported marker type" followed by a hexidecimal (?) number, not always the same. For full details, please check out my other thread. I cover more specifics, including my system specs, things I've tried, etc. but to no real avail. I want to also point out that after doing some web/news searches for this type of error, I've seen references to it in ALL of the current Quake 3-based games (RtCW, Quake 3, Elite Force (? I think that's the name), etc.), but I've not seen very many actual answers as to what's causing it (or how to fix it). Some people seem to think it's an installation problem (solution: reinstall) and some people think it's a video driver issue (solution: install newest drivers). But after all's said and done, digging into those areas doesn't make the problem go away and the bottom line is that I can't play the game. But everything else points to the fact that I SHOULD be able to. Does anyone have any idea what this error is trying to indicate, and how to fix it? Thanks once again. ~ Excalibur
HPB[XXX]
I have (had) the exact same issue.. I have PIII 933 512 MB Ram Matrox G400 SBLive 5.1 Gamer I have manage to get passed this issue somewhat by getting latest drivers + setting my desktop color depth to 32bits???? I can play multiplayer now but singleplayer locks up I believe due to the SBLive issue that I'm trying t fix.... Its frustrating to have this game 3 days and not to be able to play it . I too have seen this on previous Q3 engine games and usually can tweak enough to get around it....

Mr. Pinky
Ok, after some seriously deep looking on Google, I think I may have some leads. JPEG Information This is the site I've found. As with several others, it seems as if the error "Unsupported Marker Type <hex>" is in reference to JPEG errors. I'm thinking it has something to do with textures (seeing as most textures are in .jpg format). I was able to find this section from the above page: > Old decoders that don't handle progressive JPEG will often give rather > cryptic error messages when fed a progressive JPEG. If you get a complaint > like "Unsupported marker type 0xC2", then you definitely have a progressive > JPEG file and a non-progressive-capable decoder. (See part 2 of this FAQ > for information about more up-to-date programs.) Or you may get a generic > error message that claims the file is corrupted or isn't JPEG at all. So, from the way I'm understanding this, the error could be related to a "progressive" jpeg file, that for some reason, on our systems causes this error. The problem is 1) which file is it and 2) where is it located. Obviously it will be inside the assets0.pk3 file, as that is where most of the pertinent game information/data is stored. But there are hundreds of texture files to choose from. On a personal note, I get this error right as level 2 loads. It will load to about 70% and immediately dump me to the desktop with the console showing this error: "Unsupported marker type 0x58" I hope this information helps someone resolve this problem.
