Why does my T1 get 999 ping consistently?

I'm on a college T1. I can load webpages quickly, usually, and when I played Counter-Strike, lag was fine. Yet with JK2, I *consistently* get 999 ping. My actual ping is of course higher than that - 999 is just the maximum number displayed. I select servers that supposedly have low ping with me - in the double-digits - yet my ping in the game is 999 ALWAYS, and the multiplayer game is completely unplayable at best. At worst - and this is the more common scenario - I'm looking at a permanent "Connection Interrupted" message.

Actually the same exact thing happens with Quake 3, and it baffles me. I'm on a broadband connection - why can't I play?

Here's another post with a lag issue. This person also has a fast connection, but still experiences horrible lag. Im sure that if he hosted, with a few bots and only one human player, it would lag like hell too.

I've only seen a few people post over a problem that numerous people are experiencing. Notice I don't say must be experiencing, because it's obvious people ARE in fact experiencing it. But, by all means to those who don't have the backbone to speak up, own a game that's unplayable as it's advertised.

I'm sorry to flame the game, the lag is the only issue I have, the rest of the game is fine, and it's frustrating to have a game work so well in so many ways..but screw up in MP.

Now for the person who will inevitably talk about dedicated servers, let me tell you that's a total bull**** answer to the lag issue. 99% of the people that play PC games are not going to spend 700 bucks or more to put together a machine for a dedicated server. It's the game industries responsibility to make games that can be played on a non dedicated server without major issues, not our responsiblity to buy extra computers to run a dedicated server.

If anyone from Ravensoft sees this, the reason I am so pissed is due to the lack of response over this issue that ruins the mp experience. All I have seen posted about mp performance has to do with how high you set the options in the game. Well, I have my SUPER system set low and there is still lag over a broadband connection when I try to host JUST for myself, 1 other person, and 8 bots.

P4 1.8 GHZ

512 MB RDRAM

Geforce 4 128 mb ti 4400

SB Live! 5.1

AT&T boradband..wich kicks ass in every other game I own.

How about an answer from the dev team? And how about a fix!!

Now, for those on the board that are the usual &^&kissers, you may begin to flame me now.

For those who want to speak out and get results, keep this post up top.

*Bump*

Wow! So that means that when you are playing a non dedicated server, with only one player and the host player, NO BOTS, you still get horrible ping. That's truly pathetic.

I'm curious though, what's your connection speed?

I hope they release a patch for this game to make the net code more stable. Wait, did I say more stable? I meant acceptable as programming.

I have the same problem except I'm on a 56k.. My friend's non-dedi server pings 167-230 on the list.. Once I get in the pings are 380-400+ with those 999ms connection interrupted spikes..

It's really friggin' annoying why bother to have the server pings shown before you join? They need a disclaimer. "Add 200-500ms (not counting the lovely 999ms+ spikes) to the ping shown."

Yeah, this is a problem in the game itself that needs to be adressed in a patch.

Sorry tp blow up in my earlier post, but it's embarassing to tell a friend to buy a game 'cause it's awesome, and then have the terrible ping deal happen when both of us are on cable. It especially makes me feel bad because my friend doesn't make anywhere near as much as I do, and 50 bucks is a major purchase for him nowadays :(

If I start a server I can add bots, I have used 8, without lag.

When I play online it seems to be fine for awhile...long enough to start having a good time. Then out of the blue the ping spikes to 999 and "connection interupted" is on the screen and my online game experience is over. Whether this is a product of the terrible AT&T service I have been getting( this is another story ) I don't know. The service has been faster as of late. I guess I will try another game to see if the same thing happens.

im not sitting at my home computer right now but most games have a bandwidth switch built in somewhere, its where you select yoour connection type. in most games the standard practice is to pump it all the way up to T1+ in hopes that it will allow you to funnel all the data your line can handle...well, newer games are MUCH smarter than that. Scale that selection back to DSL or ISDN and you will most likley find surprising results. The game sees that you have a T1+ line and it rams as much data out as it can and your line (be it a cable or dsl or even a college T1 with 5000 other users on it) cant REALLY handle all the traffic the software is throwing at it.

so, try setting the in-game bandwidth switch to a lower speed line and see if that helps.

i run a Cable line that scores in the 1400 kb/sec range on http://www.toast.net and i have my bandwidth switch in game set to DSL. slower than my actual connection, yes, but i have yet to ping over 100 to ANY server, that includes euro and asian servers. give it a try and report back ASAP! :ewok:

BZA it's not dedicated servers causing the problems. Most of (if not all of) the servers shown in the "internet" list are dedicated servers. We're talking about a server you create and play in on the same computer (non dedi) with other people and with/without bots added.. If I'm not mistaken these types of server do not show up in the internet list, and you have to manually add them with the "add new favorite" button.

Changing the bandwith (/rate) doesn't make a bit of difference to the 999ms spike.

as you can read here yourself, i was responding to this guy's problem with internet servers from his college T1 line. your dedicated server discussion came up as an offshoot while nobody answered this dude's questions, so i did it myself.

now then, this game is a CPU hog and if you think your desktop machine will be able to run a dedicated server and run bots and all that while leaning on 1 lousy CPU you are crazy, the retardedly high pings are a no brainer, your 1.2 gig (or whatever) CPU simply doesnt have the power to run a server, think and play for a group of bots, and run your client at the same time. did you expect it would? with all the advanced gameplay features etc? i sure as hell wouldnt expect it to run smooth on my machine, your expectations are too high for the non-dedicated server and your par-to sub-par machines.

I found out the problem. This semester, my college added some software to regulate the bandwidth allocated to each user on the network, so it literally blocks most of the data JK2 is sending, which is why I kept getting the "Connection Interrupted" message. They didn't have it before, which is why I used to be able to play multiplayer games.

So it has nothing to do with JK2 or Quake 3 (the netcode is Q3). I spoke to them and hopefully they'll increase the capacity late at night when few people are on, but who knows. Anyway, that's my problem. I don't know why it's been slow for you people.

I can host my own server with 8 bots and have a ping of 6 and never drop below 60 fps, yet if I join anyone else's server, regardless of how many people are there (unless it's dedicated and has NO players OR bots) my ping is 999. I can ping the server outside of the game and have a time of 100, yet ping 999 in game. 15 seconds after I give up on trying to play this game I can also join a 16 player counter strike game and ping 160 for 2 hours, come back here and instantly ping 999 on a dedicated server with no players and 1 bot. So go ahead and try to tell me it's my connection or it's my computer.

Oh well guys, I guess our "sub-par" machines are the cause of all of our problems, so we might as well not say anything else about it..

We'll need quantum computers to be able to run one or 2 bots and a server or to even connect to someone else's non-dedi that has one or 2 bots if any at all without a 999ms spike.

Why bother even playing games at all with anything less than a terahertz system..

Hmm my 1.5ghz tbird 640mb pc133 sdram and gf3 runs 8 bots at 1280x1024@2x fsaa no hiccups whatsoever!

As for the first poster a T1 on a college campus being used by god knows how many people could bring that 1 T1 to 56k speeds, if the T1 was pumped directly into your system that would be one thing however your sharing bandwith with the rest of your campus thats most likely the issue your having! At work we have multiple t1's coming in and you can tell when everyone is surfing at lunch cause the net bogs down!

And game is fine on my DSL connection. Maybe wait for gamespy support for more reliable ping times!

i have a pIII 1 gig, 256 meg ram, geforce 2 card....i have never.....I REPEAT NEVER seen such bull#$@% pings on any other fps game i have ever played... I am on cable I play rainbow6, rogue spear, quake, ghost recon, all the half-life games, etc... and going to any server (zone, gamespy or even the ones in the game themselves) has never given me as much problems as this does.... what the &^$#, ok my ping before game 68 but you get into the game ping 568 ot worse 999.... don't tell me its the install or i have to many games because i did a fresh reformat just to play this game...

So can someone explain to me what the hell is going on this is really upsetting because i know other people are dealing with this too.. so what is the solution is raven actually expect us to go out and get a 700 dollar a month t1 which according to the guy above still has the same problems or how about we set up a dedicated server to play a game...yeah i have that money i'm lucky i can even afford to keep my cable (if i was only using it for gaming i wouldn't even have it)

So someone explain to me when these "games" get tested for mp gaming is it on super computers that have networked connections on room away from each other, or do they actually test it in real world senarios... I doubt they do or the would have seen this coming and may be did something about it. Or is this another case of get it out the door to the public and pick up the pieces later with 37 patches that it will take 6 months to perfect and another year for everyone to get on the same page so you don't get errors like "can not connect your game version differs from server"

well sorry to flame but i had to say something i can only hope that this problem is addressed and soon because without it, it will lose all its potential to be a great mp game

I'm on a 56k and... well... to tell you thew truth... i've been getting the lowest pings that i've EVER got on a multiplayer game.

The problem seems to be mroe with broadband connections... i can run a non-dedi server with 12 bots (most ive tried) with no slowdown and still a ping of 0.

computer: p4 1.4ghz, 256mb ram, geforce 2 gts..

Try setting your connection speed to 56k or the like and see how that goes.

I am having the same problem. It will run for a about 10 seconds

at a good ping then it will spike to 999 and the game will pause

with the connection interupted. It does this and I am only playing 1 on 1 with another person. I have tried it over the net and

through a phone to phone hookup it still does this. All other games work great. Rogue spear, Battlezone, ect ect.

Please fix this in a patch.
