General question about Katarn's character...

This post is just for conversation.. not a critique of JKII or any of the DF series...

I loved DF because Kyle Katarn was a hired rebel operative in a Han Solo style of character. Still one of the best memories in gaming for me. Although I dearly loved JK, and JKII is quickly becoming one of my new favs, I still wonder about the whole Kyle Katarn becomes a jedi thing.

Kyle's character just never fit the 'jedi persona' to me. I think I would have rather JK actually followed a new character instead of Kyle to be the jedi.

This isn't a flame on any regard. I have zero complaints about any of these games. I'm just tossing up an idea and opinion and wondering what others think.

thanks!

I can see where your comming from, I was kinda the same when JK came out after playing DF. It's sort of like Dash Rendar becomming a Jedi. But I was just so stoked to have a Jedi Knight game that it really didn't fluster me.

However, I have been giving much thought as to where Lucas Arts can take Kyle on a game platform after JKII and Ive only come up with one solution. Kyle and Jan get it on and produce a child, Kane Katarn or something to the like. He joins the Jedi academy under the tutelage of his father Kyle, and the story unfolds from there. I seriously believe that this will be the last game where Kyle is under the control of the user (except add-ons) and that we will be given a new charector to delelop in JKIII, assuming that there is going to be a JKIII. So we will probably see a more traditional Jedi in the future. How exactly they are going to continue on with the Imperial Remnant is a little baffling, maybe the return of a true Sith Lord rather than the Dark Jedi.

i dont think even JO should have been based on Kyle it has to many massive leaps in credibility that he would forget all his previous force training and stuff.

and him getting tempted by the darkside again is kinda ridiculous skywalker shoulda put him out of his misery by now rather than hang around and wait for him to finally succumb to the darkside.

they should have had a young apprentice (maybe even Kyles apprentice) starting out doing some minor mission for his trials and then get sucked into a bigger storyline.

There's a wealth of game ideas out there for use as a game.

I'm reading "Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: Star by Star" by Troy Denning. Its the second to last (I think) of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion storyline.

It would be great to play as Anakin Solo. A young Jedi in training who's been thrust into a war with an alien species that cannot be sensed in the force. Just sounds like fun. Personally, I'm tired of Kyle Katarn. He does a whole lot of complaining considering he's to become a Jedi (maybe,) and I really don't want to play any more failed attempts at Prequel games, unless it involves me with a double edged lightsaber jabbing it into Jar Jar's face. Twice.

I loved the story in JK2, but Katarn is way too old now. The whole beard thing put me off just as much if not more than the mullet in MGS2. I'd like to see a fresh new face, perhaps a semi-recognizeable character (like Jaina, Jacen, or Anakin Solo) make an appearance in a game using the JK2 game.

Dash Rendar... what a great reference for an example! Yes it is just like him becoming a jedi!

As far as Remnants go.. I keep wondering, how long can this group last? Where are they producing all their stuff, and who is supplying them? Would they still be wearing the same old uniforms and stuff? It seems most books and stuff have stretched that plot of remnants of imperial forces too far. But I realize we couldn't fight stormtroopers and such if they didn't.

You know.. I would be tickled pink if they produced a game that just let me relive classic moments from the movies. That's one thing that I thought was so nice about DF.. in the first mission you are the one stealing the plans for the first deathstar. I always loved it that they placed you around the movie plotline like that.

I think Kyle becomes a jedi because as Qu Rahn says to him he HAS to do it, (wherever he like it or not), furthermore his father wanted him to be that way.

It also will be cool if they make a game and you are Kyle's Granfather or Greatgrandfather, a TRUE jedi from the republic, if not playing as Luke and Mara a la MOTS (with Kyle and Mara)

Screw Kyle, we really need a Dark Jedi campaign/game. Let's work for the Imperials and help with conquering the universe (maybe start off as a lowly stormtrooper who is discovered to hold the force and thus becomes a Jedi). It would mean new sounds and sights. As fun as it is running around those big black and grey bases, how about sneaking around rebel hangouts or hunting down Jedi located in weird and wonderful places. I'd like to see more public environments and myself working alongside other charcters.

Now that I think about it... Kyle becoming a jedi is no more cheesier than the actual movie Return of the Jedi having Leia end up being a future jedi! hehe. I guess he had no way of wrapping up who she would end up with so he made it work out without a conflict of interest between Han and Luke. I just get a chuckle sometimes when Lucas tries to convince us and himself that was his plan from the get-go.

FWB, that is a great idea. Lucasarts has done such ventures already with the x-wing series.. I don't see why they would have a problem with it... sounds awesome.

Boo hoo.

No one said you have to play it. Furthermore, if you have time to actively campaign against a game because Han's children are in it, then you might want to reassess your life, and figure out what your priorities are.

And I agree, Star by Star is one of the better books, some of the earlier ones with the Yuuzhan Vong weren't very good, but when they started hunting the Jedi, it got interesting.

watch out man.

that vaderJM guy has japanese blood in him because 200 years ago 2 people met, one being japanese or something. and we all know japanese people are all fluent with swords!! so if you were in a real sabre fight with him he would cream you !!! omg he's so 1337

;)

note: that was one of his comebacks in a debate where we're talking about sabres vs guns. so this guy is not really worth arguing with. his logic/common sense is non-existent.

I was gonna let it go, but then I got angry. What does my personal life have to do with my hatred for Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin. Nothing. Moot point.

I never said that I had a hint of japanese blood, I am half japanese, as in one of my parents is full, or that being japanese automatically makes me good at swords. I am good at swords. Second, my great grandfather came to this country with the samurai sword, a katana of our family. I'd tell you my last name so you could trace my lineage, but that would be futile.

Coulda swore I responded to this earlier, but anyhow.

With the original topic. Kyle always reminded me of Corran Horn in the Star Wars universe. They both have similar character types, especially when it came to becoming a jedi for the family honor and all type thing.

Read 'I, Jedi' if you don't believe me. They have very similar character types. They also went through similar trials and such with not sure how to deal with their new found force abilities

I agree with the NJO idea...I've been wanting to take on the Yuuzhan Vong in JK/JK2 since reading the first few descriptions of single combat against them.

Star by Star just made me laugh...a dozen-something Jedi armed to the teeth, and they can't even handle one mongrel vornskr? Kyle Katarn could've taken that entire worldship with one hand tied behind his back :)

Anakin Solo in his own game? No Way.

Anyone that downs the Millinum Falcon gets his own game - no one. peroid.

I can't recall what book it was, but he called it a pile of junk - chewie proceeded to snap his lightsaber in half (showing how much he valued the Falcon like he valued his ... his... aww hell he probably stole it from Luke, the little bastard.)
