Thanks for taking the time to look at this. Here's what I've done so far.

1.) I installed Jedi Knight 2 (Jedi Outcast) outside the default install. I installed to my F:\games\LucasArts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\ directory.

2.) I made sure no other aplication were running in the background (Including virus checkers) prior to install.

3.) Jedi Knight 2 (Jedi Outcast) installed with no problem. But to play it, I had to disable my multi-monitor setup.

4.) It ran fine all through the first level untell I finished the first level and watched the cut scene and it began loading the second level. When it then crashed with the error message below.

Thanks for any help you can provide me I am anxious to continue playing!

Unsupported marker type 0xaf

Hey, Jason-Alaska

I think I remember you from the flashpoint1985 forums. Hello.

A lot of people are getting crashing errors when they load into a new level. None of them have gotten any help, from what I've read.

I'm getting a strange error when I load the Bespin_Undercity map, where as I get "Error, Bespin_Undercity has wrong version number".

Point is, I've seen no one get help with their crash problems so far.

FetishFool,

Good to see you again... I am one in the same. :p

Have you tried reinstalling? Consider doing so after a thurogh defrag. I had a simaler problem in Operation Flashpoint and that fixed it. Good luck!

I'll post back here if I get it fixed.

I've got the same [unsupported marker type 0xaf] error message after Level 2. Mutiplay with bots works just fine strangely enogh.

If I get a solution before you I'll let you know. Tapping my fingers unitll then...

Well I updated my Geforce3 drivers to the Detinator 28.32 drivers and then reinstalled DirectX 8.1 . I was running in 1280x1024. So I switched it to 1024x768

AND...

IT WORKED!!! I got to play all of the next level. (Level 2 - Mine complex).

BUT!!!

It now crashed out with the same error message after level 2 going into Level 3 (The detention center). So I'm one level farther along but have the same problem all over again.

I thought an update might help others with simaler problems.

Ok, I've posted this information into another thread, but seeing as this one is related to the same problem, and its getting more attention, I'll repost this here.

===========================================

Ok, after some seriously deep looking on Google, I think I may have some leads.

JPEG Information

This is the site I've found. As with several others, it seems as if the error "Unsupported Marker Type <hex>" is in reference to JPEG errors. I'm thinking it has something to do with textures (seeing as most textures are in .jpg format). I was able to find this section from the above page:

> Old decoders that don't handle progressive JPEG will often give rather

> cryptic error messages when fed a progressive JPEG. If you get a complaint

> like "Unsupported marker type 0xC2", then you definitely have a progressive

> JPEG file and a non-progressive-capable decoder. (See part 2 of this FAQ

> for information about more up-to-date programs.) Or you may get a generic

> error message that claims the file is corrupted or isn't JPEG at all.

So, from the way I'm understanding this, the error could be related to a "progressive" jpeg file, that for some reason, on our systems causes this error. The problem is 1) which file is it and 2) where is it located.

Obviously it will be inside the assets0.pk3 file, as that is where most of the pertinent game information/data is stored. But there are hundreds of texture files to choose from.

On a personal note, I get this error right as level 2 loads. It will load to about 70% and immediately dump me to the desktop with the console showing this error: "Unsupported marker type 0x58"

I hope this information helps someone resolve this problem.

EDIT:

Ok, I can more or less confirm my earlier analysis. Looking again at the console output, I noticed this interesting bit, which appears just before the game shuts down and gives the error...

I'm no JPEG expert, but I'd say therein lies the problem. I hope all this information helps.

Mr. Pinky!!!

You've been busy! By the time we do get this darn game working on our machines you will be able to include yourself in the ranks of the Joint Photographers Expert Group! (The gang that decided there was a need for the JPEG file format to begin with.)

You're becoming a pro! It did get me thinking about file coruption. File coruption, more common on fragmented hard drives then unfragmented because of the number of times the bits of data gets spread out. What if it's as easy as:

1.) Save your save games

2.) An unistall

3.) A defragment

4.) A restart

5.) A reinstall on a freshly defragmented drive.

I'm going to give it a go tonight. I'll post back here if that gets it working. Cross your fingers... and lightsabers. ;)

Thanks for the info! :)

No problem at all on the info. I really do hope it helps you folks out.

As for me, I got fed up, had some free time, and decided to exchange the game where I bought it for another. I figured "what the heck, can't hurt." Well, sure enough, it didn't hurt. I no longer crash with that error (or crash at all for that matter... so far).

I'm not suggesting this as a course of action for everyone, but in my case, it worked. :)

Best of luck to you on this problem. Cheers!

Haven't tried it yet since I'm at work right now.. but thought I'd share it with you guys.

Their reply/solution

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This error will occur due to installation problems with the game.

Uninstall, delete the game folder, and reinstall the game.

To perform a Safe Mode installation of the game you will need to do the following.

1) Right-click on the desktop and select New > Folder. Name this folder Jedi

2) Using Windows Explorer, view the contents of your CD-ROM drive while the game disc is inserted.

3) Highlight the entire contents of the CD-ROM drive and select Edit > Copy.

4) Right-click on the Jedifolder on your desktop and select Paste.

5) Once the files are moved over, restart your machine in Safe Mode.

Windows 9x and ME - press the F8 key when you see the "Starting Windows" message during bootup, right before the Windows loading screen. Then select "Safe Mode" from the boot menu that appears.

Windows NT - select "VGA mode" from the boot-menu before loading.

Windows 2000 and XP - press the F8 key while the gray status bar crosses your screen before the actual loading screen opens. Then select "Safe Mode" from the boot menu that appears.

6) After the system is all started, double-click the Jedi folder on the desktop.

7) Double-click the SETUP folder.

8) Double-click on SETUP.EXE.

9) Follow the on-screen instructions, installing in the default directory on your hard drive.

jason-alaska - I have the same problem(s), and I feel like I've been talking myself blue in the face regarding this problem ever since I got the darned game, and annoying everyone in the process.

:mob:

I've detailed my experiences in the curiously overlooked threads here and here (much bigger; original post).

I should add that I've had limited success with varying amounts of changes whenever the problem crops up. Sometimes that means I have to toggle graphics settings back and forth (with restarts) a couple dozen times, then suddenly my game will load with no problems (even with all the graphics settings turned all the way back up - contrary to what I'm being told, my system CAN play this game with everything turned all the way up in 1024x768, and quite quickly, too (P4-1.5GHz/512MB/ATI Radeon 8500 64MB)). Sometimes that means I have to try uninstalling/reinstalling the game 1-3 times. But usually I can get back into the game, albeit until the next occurence of the error pops up.

This is not, however, very acceptable behavior. If it's installed and works on one load (same save game), then refuses to load on the next attempt (same save game), that would imply that the game data is spontaneously corrupting itself, which doesn't make any sense.

I find it curious that this "unsupported marker type" error is apparently seen in just about ALL of the retail Quake 3-based games, and no one seems very sure what fixes it. Though usually it seems a re-install is in order. A fresh install, with that methodology in mind, should never have this problem. But I've had this problem from the very beginning (first load).

I'm going back and forth with Lucas. tech about this, but they seem rather clueless about the whole deal. Telling me to do things I very clearly explained to them I'd already done. It feels like I'm not talking to the right people.

That I can ever get through the error is a small victory, as it allows me to continue to see bits of the game, interspersed with hours of aggrevation. But this problem needs solving, for sure. It's driving me crazy!!

Mr. Pinky - I caught your reply in my thread, but thought I'd reply to you here. I discovered the same thing (JPEG issue), and know I said this to someone. If it wasn't here, then it was on USENet, and if it wasn't there, I was educating a Lucas tech. rep. :) In any case, not sure what to make of that, other than it sounds like there are a number of (sometimes?) corrupted files either on the CD itself, or in the installation after it's copied over to the hard drive.

I was wondering about exchanging the CD. Unfortunately, I got mine mail-order, and that would be QUITE the hassle. I'm interested to hear how your game fares now that you've switched to a new/different CD.

zilung,

You actualy got a reply from tech support! WOW! How'd you do it?!?!?! ;) I'll try the "Safe Install" tonight and post back here my outcome.

ExcaliburDragon,

I'm not sure how I missed your original post, I searched for this very issue all through the forums and missed it. This is not a problem it's an epidemic! Glad to have found more people with the same problem, so I know it's not just me. But I sure am sorry so many others are having this problem.

I want to LOVE this game, but your point in your original post about being:

not willing to continue on in the role of professional trouble-shooter indefinitely in order to get it to work

Is DEAD on. How long till we get some answers.

I've never seen a game with SOOOOoooo many people having the same problem, but in so many different areas of the game, Level 1, Level 2, Loading this savegame, Loading that savegame.

Wishing I could be a Jedi, :luke:

There were similer issues with Tribes2 when it first came out, alot of it was chased down to the copy-protection on the CD.

There was alot of file corruption occuring during the install process and they ended up releasing a small utitliy that would do validity checks on the files to iinsure that the install would run correctly.

It didn't take too long for them to correct it as several of us were working directly with the developers to find out why so many people were having install/crash issues with the game.

It would be nice if Raven showed the same kind of ownership and at least responded to the issues at hand.

Voodoo, I was thinking the same thing. When a person can't install JK2 at all because of the copy protection, it's pretty obvious. They usually get freaky errors during the install such as the classic "invalid 32-bit application". But I'm thinking that sometimes it appears that the install went fine but some of the files copied are now corrupt.

Like you said, a validity checker would be great. I'm going to start a thread mentioning this, unfortunately with no concrete solutions but I think it would help people be more alert to this possibility - mentioning your name of course.

zilung,

The advice tech-support gave you was dead-on.

My Unsupported marker type *x** problems are over and I'm playing smooth! So for everyone else having this same problem try a simple uninstall/reinstall with a twist, detailed below. I did it with out the "Safe-Mode" install that your tech support recomended. What can I say, I'm impatiant!

-------------------------------------

If you have saved games, you will need to copy the GameData folder from the previous installation folder to a temporary location, just in case.

Do an uninstall, make sure to choose Yes when prompted to keep your saved games and configuration files when uninstalling, so you do not lose your progress or key bindings.

1) Right-click on the desktop and select New > Folder. Name this folder anything, like: "Jedi"

2) Using Windows Explorer, view the contents of your CD-ROM drive while the game disc is inserted.

3) Highlight the entire contents of the CD-ROM drive and select Edit > Copy.

4) Right-click on the "Jedi" folder on your desktop and select Paste.

5) Go get a snack, the file copy will take a couple minutes.

6) After the files are all transfered, double-click the Jedi folder on the desktop.

7) Double-click the SETUP folder.

8) Double-click on SETUP.EXE.

9) Follow the on-screen instructions, installing in the same directory you originaly installed JK2 to.

Relaunch the game and with all the powers of THE FORCE you can muster.... PRAY! I think it's this last step that really helped. I played clean with now hang ups or Unsupported marker type *x** error messages. Clean through 4 levels last night!

The reason this works (Speculation only)

Based on findings and observations made by Mr. Pinky in this very forum. It appears that files are getting corrupt during the install. Copying the files to the hard drive and installing from there seems (So far! GULP!) to have fixed my problems. Thanks to everyone who was helped to solve this DELIMA!!! :D

Special thanks to:

Glad to hear it worked for you Jason, but it didnt do the trick for me :(

Here's what I replied to Activision support (still no answer on the reply)

I tried what you suggested, but I couldnt copy the ASSETS0.PK3 file to the disc, it returned with this error: Cannot copy assets0: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). I did a work-around, created an image of the CD, then extracted that image to my drive, it seemed to work. I installed the game from the extracted image file and it installed.

But now I got an even more serious problems. When I tried to launch the game in single player, the game launched, showing the Lucas Arts logo movies andthe two others. But when it was supposed to launch the actual game (with the menu etc) it returned to Windows! And the screen image in Windows had amuch, MUCH higher/brighter contrast than before. I had to reboot Windows toget it back to normal. This doesn't happen when I select multi player, then the game works perfectly.

I talked with a few experienced game players, and they suggested that it might be the CD copy protection, so they suggested replacing the JK2SP.exe file in GameData\ dir with a "no-cd" JK2SP executable which I could download from GameCopyWorld.com. I tried this, and downloaded the file which appeared to be newest - still the same error. A few of the others did the same - but one worked, and this time I got into the game. But the Unsupported marker type error is still there.. on the same place - when loading the ARTUS TOPSIDE map..

I've got the same problem with it dying at the end of the first level. I don't get any errors though since my machine spontaneously reboots when this happens.

Athalon XP 1800+

512 ram

C-Media CMI8738 MX Sound Chip (onboard my Iwill XP333 motherboard)

Radeon 7500 64MB DDR (All-In-Wonder model)

WinXP Home

Another reply from Activision Support, all though this one doesnt solve anything. I think they have no clue why this occurs. My best guess is that it's the cd copy protection..

Further to your correspondence of 4 April 2002

Try changing the following settings on your CD rom drive and then reinstall the game:

. Right click on My Computer and choose Properties.

. Then choose Device Manager and expand the tree for CD ROM, then double click on the CD Icon that appears.

Next, choose the settings tab and ensure that you have the following settings:

. Disconnect - Ticked

. Synch Data Transfer - Ticked

. Auto Insert Notification - Ticked

. DMA - Ticked

. Also, please check that your start/end drive letters show the same as the Current Drive Letter Assignment. ie. If the Drive Letter Assignment is D:, but the start/end drive letters are either a different letter or blank, please change these to match the Drive Letter Assignment.

. If you have changed anything in order to match the settings above, please choose ok, and ok again.

(You should then be prompted to restart your computer for the new settings to take effect).

I've never seen any game publisher admit that a game's copy protection can cause install or run problems. Most likely because they don't want to tell anyone that they can't play the game unless they get a different DVD-ROM or CD-RW drive. I'm sure they've figured it out by now but they don't want to admit to a lose-lose situation.

I'm having the same high contrast/brightness crash issue mentioned above...

I finish level 1... the stats screen comes up... bla bla secrets.. bla bla enemies... then it gets to about 70-80% load for the next screen and crashes to desktop with a really really bright, unreadable screen... only option at that point is a reset...

I did have this happen a few times DURING level 1 but once I rebooted and loaded my save game it was fine... it happnes EVERY time I try to complete level 1...

I'll try the reinstall fix tonight and see if it helps, though I have no confidence that it will help...

The Unsupported marker type *x** problems have returned... Here's how I fixed them... AGAIN!

I uninstalled / reinstalled (from Hard Disk, much faster then CD)

It worked fine as long as I was playing it after the reinstall. Huh? So I exit the game, come back to it. Runs great, exit the game and go back to it again... Runnin' fine. I must have fixed my Unsupported marker type *x** problem for REAL this time!

--Or did I?--

I shut down my computer for the night. Come back the next day. Guess what??? Unsupported marker type *x** error. All I did was turn on my system. I Reinstall again, mind you I'm on my 12th reinstall of Jedi Knight2 now. It's running great AGAIN! I'm 6 or so missions into it.

I confirmed, in the efforts of trouble shooting, that if I shut down my system the Unsupported marker type *x** problems return.

My currant solution. Leave my system on all the time. Never shut it down, and hope it never crashes using any other program. If it does, reinstall.

So try leaving your system on after a reinstall and see if that does anything for you. Good luck!!!

We need more then the FORCE to help us with this one. We need the power of TECH SUPPORT !!! :c3po:
