Edward_Zeth
My system specs: VIA Apollo P4 Motherboard Intel P4 1.6 GhZ Processor 512 MB RAM 2 or so gigs free on HD NVIDIA Vanta 16 MB 3D Card 1.2 MBS RR Cable Connection Windows 98 SE Latest Detonator Drivers Latest VIA Drivers ========================================== Everytime I load up JK2, single or multi player, it freezes while in the menu, or while playing, always within 10 minutes of it being started, even when graphics and everything are set to the LOWEST POSSIBLE SETTINGS, or SFX are completely off. When I play other games, it overheats and freezes sometimes (Half-Life Day of Defeat MP, freezes every hour or so; Hitman, freezes rarely, MOHAA, freezes every 2 hours or so, if ever; C&C Renegade, freezes every 2 hours or so; Max Payne, freezes every 2 hours or so if ever). ANd I can play these games with SFX and GRAPHICS at high or medium levels. Now I wouldn't be posting this if it froze every 30 or 60 minutes due to overheating, but this si happening within 10 minutes, even if im not playing, but just going through the setup. Usually it will freeze within 2 minutes, or as soon as the menu loads. When it freezes, I can't ALT TAB or CTRL ALT DEL or ALT F4. I have to shut down the power and wait a minute or two before it will reboot successfully. I can play other Q3 Engine games, and other games which have good graphics, such as Hitman and C&C Renegade for a long time, with good grpahics settings, but JK2 is freezing way too quick, even though EVRYTHING is on the lowest possible setting, and even if i just booted my comp up after having it shut down and cooling for 12 hours. I haven't even been able to play SP, because it freezes to quick, I've played MP maybe 5 minutes at most. I have the latest drivers, so what gives? Kaotic
My guess is it's the Vanta. The Vanta is one of nVidia's "cost-effective" video cards that computer manufacturers will throw into their systems to save money. The card probably supports only a barebones level of special features. I used to have a Vanta in my system and it was prone to freezing as well. Then I got a GF2 which has been a lot more friendly, especially with these more recent Detonator drivers. So you may want to look into upgrading your video card. -Kaotic
Exitium
It ain't the Vanta. It's happening to a lot of other systems, even extremely high end ones. We're talking Athlon 1.9 with 1024 ram and GF4.
Kaotic
Hmm, strange. With this card and the latest drivers I've had few complications with FPS games. They will crash out sometimes after like... 4-6 hours but only to the desktop where I go and run it again (my computer probably wants me dead). It's very rare when I hit a freeze and have to manually shut it off. They became less common with the 28.32 drivers. This computer is only an Athlon 900 with 256 megs ram with a 64 meg GF2 MX400 running XP. I normally consider the 4-6 hour program crash a sign that I've played too long -Kaotic
Exitium
Same here. Those 4-6 hour crashes are just the memory dumps messing up after you load/save too many times. I have no idea why JK2 freezes up so much. I've had Battle Realms and MOHAA freezing when I installed some bad drivers but those problems don't exist for me anymore. Not sure why JK2 does it.
