CopyProtection may cause more than bad installs...crashes too

Alot of people are cannot directly install JO from their CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD-ROM drives due to the CopyProtection on the CD. This usually results in an obvious error during install - the most common one being "invalid 32-bit application".

In another crash-related thread a member named Voodoo-u mentioned that he knew of trouble with Tribes 2 where the game could be installed but when run would result in crashes. It turned out that even tho the game seemed to install okay, files were being corrupted as they were copied to the hard drive - due to the copy protection...and the end result was crashes.

We've all read all the freaky and different errors and crashes people are getting with JO. It's really puzzles me because with all these different errors it almost seems like the game's a beta release.

Bottom Line: I think Voodoo-u has a good point in saying that the copy protection is causing alot of unknowingly corrupted installs.

I'm going to write to Lucasarts about this whole issue and see what their response is (assuming I even get one). In the meantime, I'd recommend that you uninstall, wipe out the JO directories (save those savegames, etc.) and re-install the game. Or if you can narrow down an error to a specific file or exe, try replacing it from your CD.

If I get a reply I'll post it. In the past I've never seen a company own up to the fact that copy protection causes so much problems.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that it is possible that exchanging your CD for another might (and I say might) help the problem.

Try this (prefferably if you have an original C.D!)

Copy the data only from the original to a directory on your HDD. Burn this data back onto a CD with the same label as the original.

Install from your copy. Get 2 no cd patches for both single and multiplayer. Keep the original .exe files for when updates become available.

I never installed from the disk with safedisk on it and mine runs fine. 1024x768x32bpp with FSAA on. Only problem is those shadows.
