Newbie questions about JKII music

Hi everyone. I'm new with this so I was wondering if anyone had answers to the following:

 

1. It seems as if the music in JKII are mp3s in a pak file. By playing mp3s during a game, does performance take a hit?

 

2. I know the music can be changed, becuase I've seen a mod...but are there any guides as to how to change the music? I want to add my own.

 

3. In relation to question #1, would it be better to make a music CD and play it instead of the mp3s for better performance? And is there anyway to get JKII to play music off the CD like in the old Quake days instead of the mp3s?
