A FIX FOR - Unsupported marker type *x**

My Unsupported marker type *x** problems are a thing of the past, and I'm playing smooth! So for everyone else having this same problem try a simple uninstall/reinstall with a twist, detailed below.

-------------------------------------

If you have saved games, you will need to copy the GameData folder from the previous installation folder to a temporary location, just in case.

Do an uninstall, make sure to choose Yes when prompted to keep your saved games and configuration files when uninstalling, so you do not lose your progress or key bindings.

1) Right-click on the desktop and select New > Folder. Name this folder anything, like: "Jedi"

2) Using Windows Explorer, view the contents of your CD-ROM drive while the game disc is inserted.

3) Highlight the entire contents of the CD-ROM drive and select Edit > Copy.

4) Right-click on the "Jedi" folder on your desktop and select Paste.

5) Go get a snack, the file copy will take a couple minutes.

6) After the files are all transfered, double-click the Jedi folder on the desktop.

7) Double-click the SETUP folder.

8) Double-click on SETUP.EXE.

9) Follow the on-screen instructions, installing in the same directory you originaly installed JK2 to. That way you keep your save games and preferances.

Relaunch the game and with all the powers of THE FORCE you can muster.... PRAY! I think it's this last step that really helped.

---------------------------------------------

I played clean with no hang ups or Unsupported marker type *x** error messages. Clean through 4 levels last night! Previousely I couldn't get to the second mission due to the Unsupported marker type *x** error messages.

The reason this works (Speculation only)

Based on findings and observations made by Mr. Pinky in this "Tech Help" forum. It appears that files are getting corrupt during the install. Copying the files to the hard drive and installing from there seems (So far! GULP!) to have fixed my problems.

If this did not fix your problems see the post by zilung in this forum:

http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=437403#post437403 for another option. A "Safe-Mode" install. The walk through posted here cuts some corners and is without the "Safe-Mode" install. What can I say, I'm impatiant!

So see the OTHER post for a complete walkthrough of the "Safe Mode" install if THIS walkthrough doesn't fix your Unsupported marker type *x** error messages.

Thanks to everyone who was helped to solve this DELIMA!!! :D

zilung Who posted his tech support advice.

ExcaliburDragon Who had the same problems as I.

Mr. Pinky For some terrific observations on file corruption!

Now, I gotta go save the galaxy... :luke:

Could you give more information about what you did.

For example,

Did you uninstall your original? If so did you go with the option to keep saved games?

Did you try copying your original /game data directory (that's the one you would have made a backup of if you wanted to keep save games etc.

Did you try doing the uninstall / reinstall using the "Safe Install" method listed here: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=437403#post437403

Some things to consider. Do you still have the CD in the CD drive? You'll still need it to play. Are you using one of the "No-CD" cracks to avoid using your CD when you do play. I always avoid these. They are more trouble then the're worth.

A little more detail and maybe one of us can help. Good Luck! :fett:

Stylus --

Sounds like you just need a good 'ol CLEAN reinstall. You've un and re installed so many times, my head is spinning just from reading your post ;)

I'd suggest:

1) uninstall the game and say YES to removing saved games and configs, etc.

2) go into your registry (PLEASE be careful) and do a search for the word "lucas."

Delete any and all keys relating to this game.

3) reboot

4) reinstall the game

Seems like a waste of time, yes, but I think it's worth a shot.

I also reccomend doing the above...

Only dont use the Autorun install....

Use setup.exe through Explorer

or through the Run option on the Start Menu

If you still want your save games....

Copy the files directly to another folder on your HD...

Then re-copy them to the saves directory after you re-install....

They should still work..

Didnt work for me...in fact, now the game wont play whatsoever...did everything instructed, as well as killed everything in the registry...Just can get to menus...

My final step to this before storming THE RANCH is going to exchange the CD and see what happens...

As I see that more and more people are having these problems, and at different stages in the game at that, Im definitely leaning towards the error being something that happened after it was in Lucasarts/Ravens hands...

Great info though everyone, thanks for helping, keep up the great work on this problem, and Ill post the results of the new cd install after the exchange...

SUCCESS!!

Since I last left you, I tried all the safe reinstall things, both from drive and disk, and no help, and went back to Walmart and exchanged the game...(They were very courteous, I had no receipt, yet no probs...)

I reinstalled the game, and same probs...

SO...

I uninstalled both the game and video driver...Went in to the registry and removed all traces of both...

DEFRAGGED my drive and ran CLEANUP on my drive...

installed the driver...

installed the game...

No problems whatsoever...

So what it looks to be is that Jedi Outcast must need a pretty clean, defragged drive to install on...in past installs, I would get long 1-2 minutes pauses at various points - 29 percent, 38, percent, etc...

After the defrag, was a clean sweep with barely a pause, and when it did, was just a few seconds...

Try this out, and see if it helps for you...Make sure to post your outcomes here, as this could help for many users...

GOOD LUCK, and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU...

TONY
