Problem using shield generators

I walk up to them and press control, but my shield rating does not go up. I've gotten the shield belts before...I don't understand. THe instructions say to approach them and press the use key. That's CTRL right?

 

Also sometimes switches that should go on don't seem to.

For instance, I'm at the main array (in level 1) and all the codes match what I was given...But my data pad still says i have to match the red and green ones...But they look the same. There are other instances, where I managed to get it to work, but don't know how (shield generators, and a couple earlier door switches iI was having a hard time with)

To activate Inventory Items you will want to use the "Enter" button on your keyboard and to use switches, use the "E" key. I hope this helps?

for the switches once you match the codes you have to use (E key) three sliders.
