OpenGL problems

I have read throught this forum and have noticed that a good number of people are experience the same error that I am. I can't get the game to work at all. Now, I have a clean install of win xp pro which I tried to update the drivers from Visiontek (card manuf.) with no success. XP told me that the drivers currently installed (XP default) are correct and it didn't recognize the new drivers. I have a couple of questions. 1) How do I get XP to take the updated drivers from Visiontek and 2) Was this tested before JO release? With so many people with the same problem it is quite interesting. 3) Where does everyone get old drivers from? Nvidia and Visiontek only list the most current.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided. I would love to have a chance to enjoy the game.

You can search for them on the Nvidia website. But dont bother. I went back 7 generations and re-installed the game each time. Doesnt work.

They released this before it was ready. Just read the original FAQ buried on the cd. It only supported Nvidia to TNT.

What exactly is your problem Van? It won't load the GL subsystem? If so, before you got your Geforce 2, did you have a 3DFX in there, like a voodoo or a banshee?

If the Geforce is the only card you've ever had in there it should work fine. If you used to have a voodoo though that can be a major pain in the ass because the voodoo is infested all over your registry with its own Glide files and it confuses the Nvidia card.

I ended up reformatting to get rid of my old voodoo2's trail back when I got the original Geforce, even hunting through the registry takin out every 3dfx file didn't help. D3D will work but not GL. If you did have a voodoo, I'd try regclean after add/remove, then go in manually, and I'm sure there is some program now that will wipe it out too.

If you didn't have a Voodoo before though OpenGL should work. Go to http://www.guru3d.com or http://www.reactorcritical.com and get the 23.11 drivers, that's what Raven is recommending. You should be safe with any version between those and the new 28.32 at Nvidia, but the new ones have issues with JK2 and also they are more for a GF3 or 4, and tested slower for me.

No matter what you get you should always stick with Nvidia reference or beta's though, performance is always better. I don't think anyone ever uses actual manufacturer drivers.

As for installing them, if you are using XP just go to add/remove programs and ditch the ones you have in, then reboot and XP will load a default GF2 driver, as long as you are only overwriting old detonators your safe to just run the setup of the drivers you want in there and you are done, it will overwrite older versions of files.

The traditional clean way is to install a standard PCI adapter after rebooting, reboot again, then do the new drivers. XP makes that a ***** though cause it does whatever the hell it wants and loads a generic. If you wanna be picky though you can go into safe mode when you reboot so XP doesn't take charge.

Doesn't matter though, just download detonator destroyer when you are at the site and use it once in awhile if you change drivers a lot to keep things organized. That should work...if it doesn't for some reason, the last resort is GLsetup, it's kinda like welfare OpenGL but it works.

http://www.glsetup.com/where.htm

That will get you in the game at least...hopefully you are one of the lucky ones and you dont start crashing cause there's no good cure for that yet. Good luck.

Thanks MadAtGod. Actually, just before I saw your reply, I went and installed the lastest nvidia drivers (oops). But the game works now. However, I have seen post were people are getting CTW after a few missions. Will this happen to me? And should I go for the older drivers instead. Thanks again for your help.

I don't know man but if it aint broke I'd leave it the hell alone and be happy hehe. Some were able to solve crashing so far with those newest drivers, they didn't work for me though, nothing does. I've done everything but format my HD, think I might do that anyway since it killed my profile.

Thing is I was playing fine for a day or two no problems, but once it started it went nutbar...I can't last 5 minutes. Only turning GL extensions off gives me a bit more time but then it's like a slideshow, even on GF3 with a 1.2 T-bird and 512 megs of trunk space.

I dunno last time I checked a SB Live, Geforce 3, and an Athlon were pretty popular components, and XP aint going out of style, I figured they'd be tested pretty intensely. Maybe I'll get a Cyrix processor and some integrated radio shack parts for my next rig and it might play games.

It's good enough to make it worth all these problems at least. I'd play as much as you can tonight though in case it goes charlie manson on ya =)

Your right. I'm going to enjoy as much of this game as I can. Hopefully I won't have any more trouble. I'm glad that you did reply, however. Maybe the information that you posted will help others with similar problem. There needs to be an official posting of how to fix the driver issue.

1. Get latest motherboard chipset drivers

http://www.afn.org/~afn03257/driver.html - If you don;t know which chipset you have let us know whatever you can about the motherboard and I or someone else will try to find out.

2. Download but do not install latest video card drivers for your card, use link above.

3. UNINSTALL the drivers currently on your system, when prompted to set up autodetect, tell it not to detect, you will specify, then set it up for standard VGA. Reboot, now install the drivers you just downloaded.
