Personally, I'd say that the p3 450 should work better than the 500 celeron. I think that the problem is the Voodoo 4. Do you have as up-to-date drivers as you can get on it? I'm not really an expert on the last couple lines of 3dfx cards, but I'd suggest getting a newer card. The lower-end Geforce cards are pretty cheap nowadays.

are there any guides to tweaking jk2 to run better on lower end machines??

i know there is some memory tweak but i dont know how to do it

Let's see, outside of the menu settings options [i assume you could figure out what did what there] you can turn off the rendering of the sky by issuing r_allowSoftwareGL 1

at the console, this will leave the sky a sort of cream color across, just like in Q3, and give a small performance boost in outside maps. Other than that in the menus leave shadows as simple or off, turn geometry down [this is curved surface setting], and set detail for textures to medium.

Other tricks, make sure you have NO background apps, update your drivers [all drivers, not just video], set sound to low quality, and scandisk and defrag your harddrive.

Not unless your talking 5 finger discount.......

From pricewatch radeon 8500 128 + 13-16 shipping.

GF2 TI 64MB w/special fan and 3dmark $76 + $8-$15 shipping.

Not even close, though whether its worth the extra money or not is 'another' story.

You can get a lower end radeon as cheap though either the 7500 or the 7000. but the 8500 is GF3 ti 200 material, pricewise.
