Help w/ Microsoft Mouse Lockups

Recommended Posts

I've got a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer. After playing JO for a while, the light on my mouse switches off and I have no mouse input. I've noticed someone else had this problem, but his thread got no replies. PLEASE help. Does anyone else have this problem. Having no mouse sucks!! This problem only occurs with JO. I have RTCW and MOH, and they don't have this issue.

Win ME

PIII 733

256 MB RAM

SB Audiggy

ATI Radeon 64 DDR (7200)

Thanks.

Odd, I've never had mine turn off. Have you updated its drivers and Direct X, since I think this uses direct input? looks like 4.01 released sept 2001 is the latest intellimouse drivers. Are you using usb or ps/2 input?

I'm using the USB input and I've got the 4.01 drivers installed. Right after the mouse dies the comp locks up with an infinite sound loop.

I really want to play this game. The 5 minutes or so that this game is playable looks really promising, but the bugs are killing me.

For a temp fix try using the ps/2 converter and run it that way.

I can think 2 possible things at the moment:

1. the wire or connection for yout USB sonnector is bad, you might try using the other USB port or one in a different location to see if this is it.

2. Your PSU is maxed and its not pushing enough wattage through your system to cov er everything. This is unlikely unlesss you have like a 200W psu or more drives thatn honk kong has chin's.

I hope you kept your receipt :(

There is a problem with this mouse, if you look around on the net you will find this is (or maybe was, they seem to have the problem fixed now) a fairly common problem.

The same thing happened to me a while back, so I sent it back for repair.. Haven't had any problems since.

BTW. The USB to PS2 converter probably won't work (if this is the same problem I had).

I've had this mouse for over 2 years now, and Jedi Knight II is the only game it screws up with. I play RTCW and MOH:AA (both of which I believe use a similar engine to JO). As for power, I have a 300 W power supply. I don't think it's the USB wire, because as I said, the mouse works great with everything except Jedi Knight. I can play the game for a couple minutes, and then my mouse stutters and dies.

MS optical mice have a known problem that after so many hours of usage, the wire that connects it to the computer will fray and break inside its sheath at the point where it enters the mouse.

I had had this happen on one of my previous mice, and I had it happen to my current one while playing JK2. It seems that we jerk the mouse a lot more the usual when in saber battles.

Try wigling the cable in and out and watch to see if the red light starts and stops..

if it does, you can open up the mouse and resplice the cables together... it will work fine until the new section of wire dies.

I'm afraid this isn't a frayed cord issue with the mouse. I've had the same mouse lock-up infinite sound loop on both my BRAND NEW Intellimouse Explorer and my Razer Boomslang 2000 (both in USB mode). The Intellimouse does a bit better, but I still get lockups occaisonally in SP and almost guaranteed after 5 minutes in MP.

I think I'm going to try with the mouse in PS/2 mode and see if it works any better. I'll post my results here.

BTW My system specs:

Athlon T-bird 1GHz

ASUS K7VE MB

384 MB RAMM (Mushkin)

30GB IBM Deskstar HD

Win98 (yeah I know, having major problems keeping XP stable)

SB Audigy Sound

Geforce 2 GTS 32MB Video

and my lovely USB Intellimouse

Thanks for the replies. Most people are saying that I should just switch to the PS/2 mode. I'd just like to reiterate that Jedi Knight II is causing this problem. It's not beacuse I'm jerking the mouse (I can't play long enough to get the lightsaber).

As other people have mentioned, I don't think we should have to reconfigure our entire system just to compensate for RAVEN's buggy code. RAVEN's silence on all these problems is most definitely frustrating. If I ever buy SOFII it'll be at least 8 months after it's released so that I'm sure that it works.

Two years of game play is a long time for a mouse, even optical. You are due for a new one. Save up your pennies;)

Well, I switched my mouse from USB to PS2 mode and it seems to have fixed my SP lock-up problems. Unfortunately I am still getting "Connection Interupted" lock-ups in MP games after playing 10-15 minutes.

Well at least I can play HALF the game.
