kerosene31
I set up a dedicated server on a P4 1.5. It runs smooth except for when I load up the game client and connect into the server on the same computer. When I get in, the server gets very laggy. I get constant lag and the other players complain about the lag. When I first started up I don't remember this problem happening. I don't play on the server much anyway, but I do like to pop on from time to time for testing. My only theory is that the server computer only has 256mb of ram (I'm working on getting more) and the game client takes up too much and steals away from the server. I don't think it is a bandwidth issue. I am hooked up to a 100mb line which pipes out to a T3 line. I can surf the web and download files with no problems while the server runs in the background. Any ideas?
Novus
I highly recommend you NOT run a dedicated server on the same machine as a client no matter the specs. The dedicated server shouldn't take that many resources, but the client will try to use every cycle and every piece of memory it can get it's hands on to get good framerates. Other than that 256mb of memory should be enough to run a couple of servers. People can get away w/ P200s w/ 64mb of memory for a low usage duel server. Other than that I hope you're not trying to do this on anything except WinNT, Win2K or WinXP. Also note that processor usage scales with the number of clients connected. Bandwidth shouldn't be an issue. 36 players only pushes a little under 1mbit/sec of traffic.
kerosene31
I guess that was the answer. I won't run the client anymore on the server.
