soundblaster caused freeze?

I'm haing a problem with JKII freezing up. Sometimes it happens right off the bat during the intro Lucas Arts and Raven movies; sometimes while loadiing and sometimes not until I've played for a while. The game will hang, with a buzzing type sound coming from the speakers and all I can do is hit the reset button. It seemed to be caused when there were graphics and sound at the same time, because the Q3 demo that is on my computer will freeze up the same way during the id intro movie from time to time. I also experimented with playing an MP3 and video at the same time and it freezes as well. I've taken the Sound Balster Live! out completely and the game runs fine. I've put it in a different PCI slot and it still had problems. Is the card bad? Is it some sort of conflict in resource sharing between my video and sound cards (they are not sharing an ICQ they are on 10 for the Sound Blaster and 11 for the NVIDIA GeForce 2)? Thanks for any help.

Congratulations! You may have just solved your problem. Seriously, the SBLive! has a reputation for giving some systems problems because of their poor PCI Bus Mastering. Problems seem to be most prevalant on VIA chipset boards.

One thing I always heard is to simply install the bare drivers for the card and DON'T install the Liveware (extra stuff) that also comes with the card.

Freezing, I would think, would point to a resource conflict but you're sure you don't have an IRQ or other resource conflict?

If you do have a VIA-based board you might want to check out viaarena or viahardware for "George's Latency Patch".

Or you might want to consider another sound card like the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or the Herc. Fortissimo II depending on your needs and budget.

The only thing on the same IRQ 10 as the sound card is a power sharing holder something-or-other feature that happens to be on almost all othe IRQs as well. How would I go about looking for other resource conflicts (I/O?)? What is "george's Latency patch"?

If I did decide to get a different sound card, what are some good (problem minimum) options that don't cost too much (<$200)?
