most basic problems - level 1

I'm having trouble with some of the most basic items in the game because I don't have a manual. Here's a few things I can't seem to figure out.

* I don't know how to use the shield generator to regain my health in level one.

* I can't get the elevator to go up in the room after I shoot the guard and take his key.

It's these most basic things that I can't do so I'm completely stuck (Jan's outside waiting for me as I try everything to continue with the level).

Is there any site anywhere that has the manual in .pdf format or anything?

Press "E" which is the use key to open doors, re-gain shield and get ammo from the depots.
