jk2gamex86.dll: Incorrect function

OK...here's the deal. When I try to install JK2 it seems to go really slow. When it finally reaches 1% it tries to copy the file jk2gamex86.dll it hangs, then posts a message box stating there was a incorrect function while trying to copy this file. That is as far as the installation will go.

I haven't seen any other problem like this one on this forum other than that this file may be corrupted and can cause crashes on some systems.

My system is 1 month old. A sony viao notebook gr-370, pIII 1.13Ghz, WinXP, ATI Radeon.

Can anybody help me?

It sounds like either your CDis bad or your CDROM is reading badly.

You are right about jk2gamex86.dll causing a lot of problems, though.

(Was causing problems that I was having)

Here is a workaround that worked for me (originally suggested by Noodlygod:

1. Uninstall JK2.

2. Copy entire CD to hard drive

3. Remove JK2 CD from CD-ROM

4. Install JK2 from hard drive

This should solve your problem. If you still get the same error, then swap out your CD-ROM for a new one from another computer and try again.

Thanks for the reply...

I tried copying the game to my hard drive but have problems doing that as well. Believe it or not my computer can't copy the jk2gamex86.dll file. I get a MS-DOS Error. Im trying to be patient with this but $50 was a stretch to pay for a game I thought was going to be awesome but ended up a dud. I even downloaded updated fixes for my CD-ROM but it didn't fix anything.

One symptom I notice is my CD-ROM (actually a DVD/RW drive) blinks when reading and I can tell it is having problems reading the cd. It takes a long time for it to find files when performing the installation...then finally it poops out on the jk2gamex86.dll file.

I've emailed lucas support about 2 days ago and no response... Are they flooded or are they in Hawaii enjoying the royalties off a $50 game?

I tried the game on a win98, pIII 450Mhz, voodoo 3 system...no problem with installation or cd-read. Just poor play with the voodoo 3 graphics card. Plus alot of messed up graphics!

I really want it to work on my laptop because of the flat screen...makes graphics look so much better than a regular monitor!

OK... Anyone with the installation problem here is the solution...

First I would like to say that I called Lucas Arts support and they informed me that they do not give support to laptop owners... This is such a bunch of bull if you ask me because these days laptops are more powerful than desktops from a year ago and many people are using them as their primary computer...

Here's the good part. The installation problem is a CD-ROM reading problem of which no fix is available. Support told me that there is a possible error in the way some CD-ROMs read the disc and there is nothing to do about it except...

Find another computer...copy the disc then run it on the faulty CD-ROM... Faulty is relative since mine is only 1 month old and can't read the disc. But on my PC which is 3 years old can read it fine...go figure. When you copy the disc it will format the data in a way that is easier for your CD-ROM to read... I used adaptec CD copying software.

Some people suggest copying the files to your harddrive but if your CD-ROM drive can't read the CD this won't work.

So I hope you can burn a copy on somebody elses computer or another one you have somewhere you have at home or at work.

After struggling with the installation Im finally happy and wish the rest of you luck.

Here is what Activision support had to say about getting a CD-ROM drive to read the disc if you are having this problem... (unable to install..etc)

> You can slow down the transfer rate using the following steps:

> 1) Click on Start, got to Settings, and click on Control Panel.

> 2) Double-click the System icon.

> 3) Select the Performance tab.

> 4) Select File System button.

> 5) Select the CD-Rom tab.

> 6) Move the Supplemental cache size slider to Small.

> 7) Click Apply, and then close. Restart the system when

> prompted.

I didn't have to do this because after burning a copy of the CD my drive read the copy CD better than the original...

I have read somewhere on the lucasarts website that listed the CD-ROM drives that recognized and installed the game correctly. I thought this was odd ad first, but apparently more and more people are using CD-ROM drives that were not on the list. If this is not the case, then try installing the latency patch from VIA if you have a VIA chipset. This seems to solve the problem with the other majority of the installation problems.
