Voodoo 3 problems? I've got a solution

I have a PentiumII 433 processor with 320 megs of ram. I am currently running on a Voodoo3 and I had all the problems of everyone else. I had problems with the sky, with saving, with loading, with crashing, you name it. I even had a huge problem with slow downs during the game (due in part to the voodoo3 and the slow processor speed, not to mention that the V3 is only a 16 meg card).

Here's the solution that I found: WickedGL. WickedGL is an OpenGL driver that is specifically designed for Voodoo cards. It helps Voodoo cards run OpenGL games like Quake3, and especially games like JK2. Here's what you do.

1. Go to http://www.wicked3d.com/technology/wickedgl.htm

2. Download WickedGL to your computer, and click on GLSetup.exe to download the necessary drivers for the Voodoo3/4/5.

3. On my computer, the install program put an icon on my desktop to access the softwhere where you can install the WickedGL minidriver into only certain games. Unfortunately, JK2 isn't one of the selectable games to download the drivers into.

4. What you do is go to your JK2 directory on the harddrive and look for the JK2SP.exe, and JK2MP.exe in the game data folder. Change the name of one of these exe files to Quake3.exe. Remember what the name of the origional exe file was, for you'll need it later.

5. Now go to the WickedGL software, click on the Quake3 game in the left column and go to your JK2 directory in the right column.

6. Download the WickedGL minidriver with Enhanced Resolution into the JK2 directory.

7. Now it is very important that you go back to your JK2 directory on your hard drive and change the name back from Quake3.exe to jk2sp.exe or jk2mp.ese depending on which one you chaged.

8. Repeat the whole process with the other exe file that you didn't do.

Now the game should, I repeat SHOULD, run properly. Obviously I can't guarantee this, but it sure helped me out 100%. If there are any questions, please post a reply to this sight and I'll check it every couple of days. Check back in a while for answers.

Although you do not need to do it twice, the game uses opengl32.dll and thats the only wicked3d file you're after.

My game was running ok. I even got 100 FPS or so.

But load times were horrific, and even the cinema .AVI lookin' movie clips chopped very badly. I use wicked3d with Counterstrike, didn't even think to use it with this.

If I thought it was fast before, it floats now.

I can tell it draws a lot faster probably 150 FPS.

My load times are instantaneous both ways now. And I can press ESC and bust out another loaded game or whatever.

No more chop.

I can see skies now. They are not one solid color.

Yes, I wont lie, I had that problem too. And I can whip around my view and its beautifully solid, no trails or rips.

At first I thought the video problems were from me trying to be studly and overclocking my voodoo3. Now I know I can put it back that way too!

I have a voodoo3 3500 (tv in/out version)

Windows 2000 (REAL MEN USE 2000 STILL)

athlon 800

384MB RAM

slow IDE drive (but hey its huge)

and a partridge in a pear tree.

Thank you very much for your help, the game would actually freeze after I get me and lando out of the loading bay.

I JUST NOW, days of frustration lader, get to load cloud city.

I say freeze up, because if it takes longer to load then it takes me to finish my b0wl of nugs (roughly 5 minutes) then I'm not waiting anymore and I shouldn't have to when dudes with 300mhz computers have faster loads than me.

There is also one problem with wickedGL, even the registered version. It does not let you take screenshots when you're using it. Only 4k black screens. So sad.

ANYWAY THANK YOU AGAIN

that was a smooth move you did with wickedgl
