star wars languages

Did you ever wonder how two people in a star wars movie can speak two completely different languages to each other but still understand every word they say. In the scene where c3po is translating for jaba the hut, jaba and the disguised princess speak in totally different languages- but c3po still speaks english to them. It's also kinda funny hearing chewy say raaarhhh and then hearing Han say "you found him in a junk pile." I know it was done for the purpose of the movie, but it is still funny if you think about it.

Basic (english) is the traders' language and the scholar's (like Latin used to be). It's understood by many businessmen (legit or not) so that they can communicate with any other businessmen they encounter.

Han is fluent in Huttese (the official language of Tatooine) and in Wookiee (it's a physical impossibility, though, for a Wookiee to speak english. Only one we know of has, in Zahn's original trilogy, and he has a speech impediment that lets him do it). 3PO is fluent, of course, in over six-million forms of interpretation.

There are also translator chips, I believe.

Man, you guys know a lot about Star Wars! I could have bullsh**ed and answer but you guys got really specific. If you know so much about Star Wars maybe you could help me. Do you knwo if there are any publications that give some detail about the Star Wars Universe before Episode 1? I'm not real big on reading Star Wars books, but am curious about the history that is referenced in the movies.

The Essential Chronology covers just about everything you can think of. It goes from the very beginning of civilization (before the Old Republic) to right before the New Jedi Order. You should be able to find it in any decent bookstore.
