stuck in garbage level

I'm stuck in the garbage area where the talking wall camera thing comes out of the wall and asks for the password ... the floor opens up into a room that kills - how do I open the door next to the opening floor?

Find Lando. He's got the password. Where's Lando? He's in the prison level. Where's the prison level? Go back to the door that leads onto the catwalk above the mashers. Now, walking away from the catwalk, look up to your left. You should see a grate. Go through it and look down at the end of the crawlway. Shoot the crate by the wall. Go back out of the crawlway and turn left. Drop off the balcony, cut the lock on the door, and walk through your newly made hole.

I was in that tunnel before but did not think to shoot the boxe ... I should have known there was something in there.
