Slowdown with my Geforce 4 440 go

I am having a good bit of slowdown when I play Jedi Knight II. I have a new Toshiba Satellite 5005-507 with Windows XP, Geforce 4 440 go 32MB, and 512MB of Ram.

The slowdown happens no matter what resolution or video settings. For example running the game at 640x480 with all details set to low will run the same as 1024x768 with everything maxed out. I'll be moving through a level and it will be as smooth as silk and then it will start to jerk around play like a slideshow. Then after a bit it will speed up again.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be Win XP or the video drivers(which I have the latest). Its frustrating because my friend has a Dell Inspiron 8100 w/ a Radeon(which is a slower card) and he has no slowdown whatsoever. Any comments would help before I start pulling my hair out.

Are you running on a Laptop? did you say a GO edition of the geforce4 MX 440? That GeForce MX 440...with 32mb, is exactly the equivlent of a GeForce2 Ti (ti stands for titanium which is a gaming version of the card, much faster then the stream line MX) Dont be alarmed, your MX is still pretty powerful for its worth. I had the GeForce4 440 MX 64mb, and i also experienced the chopping, which is low frames per second when alot of detail appears on screen, like in wide open spaces, or alot of bad guys on screen. Jedi knight 2 is a very complex and detailed game running on the quake 3 graphics engine. go to nvidia.com and download the latest drivers for your card, then, change your game settings to" 800x600, 32-bit color, high detail, high geo, 16-bit textures, and anistropic filtering OFF, after you apply these settings, go to more vidoe section, and turn off everything except wall marks, that means turn shadows and lighitng efftects OFF. THis is the best visual and performance settings, so it dont look to bad, but also dont run to bad, you know? Im running a Radeon 7200, and i outperformed GeForce4 MX 440. Better drivers will come so dont worry.

I am unfortunately at a loss. I just picked up a Geforce 4 MX440 myself. I learned my lesson in buying the highest priced cards on the market. I have dropped hundreds of dollars on cards only to see the slightest increase in performance. Anyway, I swapped out a voodoo 5 5500 for this card, which by all accounts should be giving me some 200% or more increase in performance (benchmark performance of course). I am actually seeing lower framerates than I had with the voodoo 5 (at least in this game, I couldn't get my framerate to dive below 90 no matter what I did to my settings in Quake III). I am considering returning this card and getting a Radeon 8500LE for a few extra bucks.
