Wes Janson SMR Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 I'll make this short and sweet. It appears that a good majority (possibly all) sound effects are in mono format - this includes MP3s and WAVs. If you convert a sound, or build a new one in the stereo channel, the sound simply won't play in the game. It also seems that the game favors 22050 Hz, 16-bit sound formats as well. But as long as they're in mono, they should play. The only exception that I've found are, of course, the music files. So if you can't get sounds to play, you might have a wrong sample rate, and/or resolution. Hope this helps a couple of you.
L2.0 Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 Nice find Wes. This is one of those "FYI's" that everyone will end up asking eventually.
Tigris Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 Yeah- that was quite startling when I did the cantina- "Now why isn't there any sound???" Just a tip: If some of you now start thinking: How the hell am I supposed to convert my sweet 16bit-44k-wav to the suggested??? Try the old audio recorder from windows. It does the job right. Just load your high-qualy wav and select "save as" then you should be able to find a compression to your liking at the bottom of the new window...
Hubris Posted April 26, 2002 Posted April 26, 2002 Try this also: http://www.goldwave.com/ Some of the best sound editing shareware there is. You'll also find it useful for helping to make loops sound good, and a wide variety of other purposes.
Wes Janson SMR Posted April 26, 2002 Author Posted April 26, 2002 The Cool Edit series is by far the best. I'm using the full 1996 version, and it more than does its job.
Markana Posted April 27, 2002 Posted April 27, 2002 I'm still having problems getting my sounds to play in-game. I've tried using a trigger to play a noise but without success. I'm kind of new to this so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
