Does anybody know how to make glowing objects?

for example like the fusion reactors in episode 1's final battle scene between Maul, Obi-Wan, and Qui-Gonn...if anyone know how to do this or create that kinda of effect I would be extremely grateful.

I am creating this map as well, and if I come up with some ideas or see other methods to do it, I will post it.

 

Also I am trying to learn how to add purple lightning arcs to a map, but no success yet.
