Ignodium
Hi, i am making this thread so that you dont have to weed through the freezing thread for a very common problem. If a motherboard supports ACPI(Advanced Configurateion/Power Interface) many new versions of windows will install the acpi driver. This driver puts as many things as possible on to as few irq's as possible. Most modern sound and graphics cards need their own irq, so 5-10 minutes into the game, they will freeze and stutter. You will need to open the properties for my computer, and then open the device manager. At the top you will see computer, and drop down the list, and if you are set to use ACPI, it will say that. If not, then this isnt your problem. Click on the properties for ACPI and go to drivers, and install new driver. The install new driver menu will ask you where to find the driver and you need to tell it to let you choose the driver. You will only see the acpi driver, and then click "show all drivers for this device class" there are now three categories, at the bottom of one, i think the top one (sorry, i dont remember which, im not even sure if there are three categories) you will see standard pc. tell it to switch to this driver, and be prepared. When your computer starts up, you will need to install all of your drivers again (allthough all but a few [sound, graphics, NIC] will be available to windows as oem drivers) so have your sound, graphics, nic, etc disk's ready. i hope this helps with some of you who expirience total lockups with sound stuttering. KERNEL
Hey i tried what you said and it didnt work, it may be that i did it wrong but i still crash. I dont freeze....i crash. I can do MP fine i can run around till the end of time but once i goto swing my saber or fire a gun(in some case just any input like a mouse click or enter will do it) the game will crash. and it will go into this ****ed up gama thing on windows. Which incase anyone was wondering i know how to fix. Just reload the the game (JK2) and exit out of it and it will go back to normal. My Specs: AMD Athlon XP 1600+ 1.4 Ghz MSI Turbo 2 Motherboard 96Mb Ram Creative Soundblaster LIVE! 5.1 Viper 2 Videocard Logitech 3 button mouse Windows
twit21
That probably would work, but it's too much hassle, imho. If you're using a desktop pc, then there's no real reason to be using ACPI. I just shut mine off entirely in the BIOS...
Ruga
That was extremely tedious... reinstalling all those drivers... sigh. And it did not help at all. I still have the same freezing. I'd advise everyone else (unless you really really are desperate and want to risk it) not to try this. Like every other solution so far: maybe it works for a few people, but it didn't work for me, and probably won't work for most.
Chiles4
Just wanted to add that with Win98, you can disable/enable ACPI in the bios only. What Ignodium is describing about is for XP. In Win98SE I disable ACPI before I load the OS. Then, to switch or re-arrange the IRQs my cards are using, I can move the cards around in the slots (crapshoot, not very effective) or go into the BIOS screen where you can change the IRQ that devices (or groups of devices more likely) are using. That worked very well for me. I think in Win2k and XP, ACPI enabled is the default. In this case I doubt what I did above would have any effect on IRQ usage. I've seen alot of people with 2K or XP that have all devices on IRQ 11. I really don't know if this could be a problem or not. I suppose if you have an older card that doesn't work well with ACPI, it might. It's my (and many others) opinion that ACPI causes more trouble than it's worth - especially in the older Win98. darth_xtro
my sound card and display adapter are sharing the same irq... how can i assign my sound card to a new irq?
vwtick
There's a command line switch for installing Win98 (and probably WinME) without ACPI, you just need to install by typing: setup /p i That being said, I still had lockups on my VIA chipset MB running an AMD CPU until I yanked out my SBLive! and put in my old MX300 A3D based card. More CPU usage but no lockups... PS I had these lockups in a Q3 based games, and Max Payne!
Teir
I aint got any problems with other online games but JK2 and i have and its really starting to pisssss me off. Why go to all this trouble with once PC just to get a game to work, i dont get it. I think Raven & his crew should look at this as a huge problem. Maby they shouldnt even have had the game released yet, seems it needs some work for sertain computers. Gameplay is fine as it is ( for me anyway ), but the configs ect ect needs some hard work, so maby the freeze/lockups whould END! Dunno bout you others, but criest man, my comp whouldnt live another month with reboots every 30 min to 1 hour:( No mate, ur idea didnt work for me either:(
