Ysaric
I have a second IP from AT&T for my server. My understanding from talking to their tech line is that for each IP you get a certain amount of bandwidth. I don't know how that works exactly, whether that is per IP or per MAC address or what. Anyway I hope it insulates the bandwidth my server uses when I am downloading on my main rig. But my question is, how many people can I reasonably expect to host on such a cable server? I seem to be able to get 4 on (including myself), with a maxrate set at 9000, but once I get over 4, or sometimes with 4, pings will shoot up. Is there anything that can be done, given my only broadband option is AT&T, that can improve network performance either to be able to have extra players or improve performance for existing players? Thanks for any information provided.
Chronic
Well.... I dont have AT&T, although i do have optus@home, which is a cable service in Aus, it's got an upload cap of 15 k/s.. Well im running my maxrate at only 4500, on a 6 player FFA game... pings never rise above 60-70 (well for those who are on cable of course, people on dial up hover around 200-250) btw my sv_maxping is set to 250, ive heard that any higher than that on a @home host would lag down bad..
