Prince Legolas
Some things simply have now "star wars" reason for its being that way. Something simply have one reason... George Lucas wanted it to be that way no matter how impractical it may or may not be. I for one am glad they have lightsabres. Starwars wouldnt be as good without them. Hibiki Kensaki
well orginaly in star wars everyone had lightsaber.. (thats what the tube on the back of the st outfit was) but then for some reason george lucas decided that it would be less cool if everyone had lightsabers... so he changed it so only the jedi's had lightsabers

There was also going to be shields to block lightsabres. This is seen on some early Ralph McQuarrie artwork. Back when the storyline was drasticly differant. The reason he restricted who got to use sabres was that if only limited people (ie: Jedi) would be able to use them it would make them seem a much more powerful and revered weapon then if everyone had them. Quvmoh
Come on. Think about it, people. Why does a Jedi "KNIGHT" carry a lightsaber? The Jedi are Knights. The weapon of choice for any knight all throughout history was the sword. They may have used other weapon types here and then, but the Sword remained their ultimate favorite. When Lucas created the Jedi, it was only natural to have them use the Lightsaber, or Lazer sword as Anakin put it in Episode 1, as their weapon of Choice. Prince Legolas
Effectivly since the only weapons seen on screen are blaster fire, a lightsabre in the hans of a jedi means the jedi basicly has a blaster too. Since a Jedi can only defend (fire once shot at) he can "shoot" a blaster shot at the attacker using the sabre and the enemies blaster fire rebounding it back at him. So in a way he has a blaster and a sword.

I think that JKII stresses this point as well since you CAN be gunners with just the saber and the force (what I mean by can is consistently). Remember force defend is kinda like a saber in itself seeing as Jedi can block and "shoot" back. It's also a tool as soon in movies, like for getting through big bad locked doors etc etc etc....
