mapmaker
It happened again. It just reaches that third stage in the VIS process then hangs there, while my computer make noise. Nothing is happening in the compiler window. This is kind of driving me crazy. My map is almost ready for release, save for this error. Any help would be *GREATLY* appreciated. I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this.
mapmaker
Just got back after having been out for a while, and checked the compilers progress. It had gone from '0...' to '0...1...' Wow. If no one knows what could be causing this I'll have to scrap the map :/
Mr. Nip
My feeling is that you just got too ambitious and made an overly complex map. That might be totally off base though, I can't tell without seeing the map myself. If you're okay with it you could post it to a private ftp site and email me the location, or maybe (ugh) email it straight to me. But I understand if you don't want to give out your xxxxx.map file. Maybe you could just post some screenshots of the halfvis-ed version so we can see how complicated it is?
Vorax
I don't think you realize how long it can take to compile a map. Put it this way...depending on your computer, the map size, complexity and number of structural brushes...it can take litterarly days..even weeks. My longest compile time was 7 days. So you know though, detail brushes can speed things up...alot. Search the net for some info on using them. - Vorax
mapmaker
Yes, but isn't there something inherently wrong with a map that takes days or weeks to compile? I;ve heard that any map, properly made with detail brushes, caulked textures, etc. should only take a few hours, tops. My map is fairly large, with about 1200 brushes, and quite a few trees, but it's no more complicated then, say, the map 'warring factions' that came with the game. So what you mean is that just because it takes ages to compile, doesn't mean there's something wrong?
mapmaker
Also, I still don't know what that 'write failure' error is. My map compiled pretty fast yesterday, but I got that error. Today, it takes ages to compile. *edit* And I'm running an AMD Athlon 1700 XP with a Geforce2 MX 400 (I know it's not good, I'm getting a new video card soon) *edit
mapmaker
If I can't figure this problem out I my hav to just let the map sit there for a while and start on another one. It's so close to being finished, it's driving my craazaaayy.

However, you only have 1200 brushes, that is nothing! I have created 25000 brush maps that compile in a day. It really shouldn't take that long unless the map has alot of space. Are you overlapping structural brushes? That can drastically slow down compiles, even if you have properly detailed everything else. - Vorax
mapmaker
Darn. It was my rock walls. Last night I removed all the rock walls as a test, and the compile time was drastically reduced. Thanks a lot for the help Vorax. Now I have to try and make a realistic looking rock wall to put around my map, without overlapping...hmmm...
