bornskir
I just can't win. I had a voodoo card and I had problems. I bought a GeForce card, and I have different problems. Now the game crashes with a Program Error "jk2sp.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program." Then a memory dump is made and I'm back at my desktop. This didn't happen with the voodoo card, only the new GeForce card (it's a GeForce 2 Ti). I have tried the newest drivers 28.32, and I have tried to older "tested" drivers 23.11 both with the same result. Someone seriously need to come up with a patch to fix all of these problems. I have never had a game give me so much trouble before. I have seen a couple of other posts regarding this type of error so I know I'm not the only one with a problem, but does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this? A little help please? Sutek
Please bear in mind that a patch is NOT the holy grail. It will NOT solve all the problems of the world magically. It is (almost?) impossible to write a PC game that works 100% of the time on 100% of ALL possible hardware and software configurations (including things like background tasks). This is sometimes caused by OTHER programs (not the game that people complain about) leaking memory, or generally being shoddy. When reviewers complain about hideous bugs in a game, that's when it's flawed. When some users complain - it's because they are the poor <=10% who DO have problems (and subsequently take the presence of others as proof the game is inherently flawed, despit the fact that nearly always, the only people ON a TS board are HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE GAME) I apologise for my rant, but I see so many people with problems with the game shouting "Give us our patch!" "Fix our problems for us!" "It's your fault Raven that my computer doesn't like this game!". It get's up my nose and I bite without thinking. Sorry. I don't think that the error there is to do with your graphics card. Check that Dxdiag reports everything working fine, and that running the video tests works ok. From there, check to see if other games using the same engine have the same problem (Q3, RTCW for example). If they do, then there's something wrong with your computer. Obviously, eliminate all background apps before running, make sure you have rebooted after a crash (to clear the memory). Read the log file JK2 generates to see if there are any obvious error messages, and then tell us all your system specs (motherboard, soundcard, OS especially), the DETAILS of the error message that win2k gave you, and anything else relevant you may find. blkdog
You know, I'd agree if with you if there weren't SO many various and sundry bugs floating around in this game! It seems like everyone has a different problem, which makes it hard to believe that the entirety of the people posting on this forum are somehow not configuring their respective versions of Windows correctly. Never have I seen this much difficulty from so many people for one game. I'm of the Occam's Razor school: "The simplest explanation is usually the one that is true." Given the choice between many users erroneously configuring their systems and LucasArts simply releasing a buggy piece of software, I'd have to go with the latter. Sutek
Given that there are so many different "bugs" floating around, I'd be more tempted to say the former myself. If a GREAT many people were having EXACTLY the same problem with common features (same hardware fr'instance), then I'd say bug. Such varied hardware having problems, I'd be tempted to go with config (OS is my pet goat at this point - XP is causing a lot of problems with games) As someone who is familiar with PC tech support, I know the kind of things that contribute to games not working properly, and I can tell you that Occams razor should only be used as a wire stripper when it comes to PCs - It's NEVER the obvious solution. I have seen this level of difficulty with one game quite often, I frequent many TS boards when a new game comes out, and always I see the same kind of problems, and the same complaints levelled at those who have put thousands of hours of their life into the little plastic disk in your CD drive. This is nothing special. PS: I forgot to mention - there almost certainly ARE bugs out there, I believe I have found one myself. These do happen for whatever reasons (I know, my fiancee is a games programmer herself). Oh well.
blkdog
I see your point. I for one am not trying to come down entirely on the programmers at LucasArts; I've run scores of their other games without incident. But wouldn't you think that, with Windows 2k/ME and XP being the predominant OSs in the market today, they would have reasonably written their code to be tailored to the multiple configurations of said operating systems? (Excluding erroneous configurations of course.) Or perhaps Microsoft has gotten so lax in <i>their</i> coding that that no developer is safe. Maybe they're looking to push LucasArts out of the gaming market. I don't know. I just want to play the next level!!!!
Sutek
I would indeed place the blame in the hands of Microsoft. I do not believe their latest "predominant" OS (a funny word considering no one really gets much choice in such matters unless they specifically state "I want a decent OS"). Win98SE may be full of problems too, but it has the benefit of not being cobbled out of NT code (WinXP is a descendant of Win2k, which itself is a rework of WinNT...notorious for it's dislike of running games of any stripe). That's why I distrust WinXP, as wells as the things my friends have found (some games work faster - unplayably fast in one case, and half of their other games won't run at all)
Ignodium
wow, ive been posting about this for a wihle and nobody ever responds do a file search for drwtsn32.log and then in that search fo jk2mp.exe, probably an access violation. i still dont know how to fix it, but emailed some sites and tech support
Graham_uk
I have this also, but found that rebooting win2k fixes it. I normally hibernate my system, but whenever i do, and then play JK2 it crashes...reboot and that may help
bornskir
OK, OK, I'm sorry I mentioned anything about a patch. Anyway, I am still having a problem with an application error. Here is something odd though, maybe it was just luck, but I noticed that the further I got in the game, the less it crashed. During the first few missions, it seems to crash constantly, but as I got further in (I just happened to take notice of being crash free after force/lightsaber levels). I had emailed LucasArts tech support about this and got a response of changing my windows display settings, but I don't see why I should have to if the game itself supports the resolution and color settings. Again, this only seemed to happen after I replaced my voodoo card with a GeForce 2.
bornskir
Ok, according to LucasArts Tech Support, they told me to change my Windows resolution to either 800x600 or 640x480 then play the game at the same setting. Oddly enough, this seemed to help. Normally I keep my desktop at 1024x768 and play the game at the same resolution, then it crashes. Then I changed both my desktop and the game to 800x600 and got through the entire Kejim level without a crash. Just as I started the mine level, I exited the game and changed my desktop back to 1024x768 and left the game at 800x600. No sooner did I start playing that the game actually locked up my computer totally. I still don't think this is right, if the game and my card can handle the resolution and color settings, there shouldn't be a problem. But until either Microsoft or LucasArts comes up with a fix, I guess I will keep trying it this way. To those others who are having the same problem, try changing your resolution and setting the colors to 16bit and let me know if this helps you too. Ignodium
did you check drwtsn32.log to see what it was? i have talked with activision for a week, get the same message repeatedly and whenever i ask them to go in depth, the person im talking to stops emailing me and they set me up with a new guy that starts all over. start reading the following from the bottom, its how they format their page. Discussion Thread Customer (Neel Shivdasani) 05/10/2002 03:00 PM it kind of bothers me that this is the third time you guys have told me to update sound and video drivers. i have dont both of those things. not to sound like a jerk. i might try to totally uninstall the drivers and then install the latest whql drivers. in the message i sent you with the drwtsn error log, what do you think about all of those programs, and what is a page file? Response (Anthony Sanders) 05/10/2002 08:41 AM Hey Neel, It looks like the drivers for your video and sound card are outdated. Visit these links and get the latest drivers for your devices: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows2000 (video card drivers) http://www.americas.creative.com/support/files/download.asp?Centric=107&OS=6 (sound card drivers) Download and install these files and that should get the game running for you. `Let us know if this helps out. We appreciate your patience and we will be awaiting your response. Customer (Neel Shivdasani) 05/09/2002 03:36 PM I have allready updated the video driver. i updated sounds drivers, but it still doesnt work. I have been trying ending all of the programs in task manager, and i do, but it seems like alot of the processes in task manager are unneeded, but im not sure which ones. Response (Brian Spayth) 05/08/2002 05:04 PM Hello, It appears that you may have a few applications running in the background. Please be sure to close down all your background applications. Did the driver download help? Customer (Neel Shivdasani) 05/08/2002 04:10 PM what do you mean by the page file is too big Response (Brian Spayth) 05/08/2002 10:23 AM Hello, Try updating your video card drivers. Please go to http://www.nvidia.com and get the latest WHQL certified Detonator drivers (version 2832). Try updating your sound card drivers at http://www.creative.com. Your page file is still a little high. Shut down all background programs. 1) Right-click on the Taskbar. 2) Select Task Manager. 3) Click the Applications tab. 4) Highlight each program listed and click the End Task button. 5) Once all the programs are closed you can try the game once again. If you need further assistance, please let us know. Make sure to include an updated dxdiag report with any future reply. bornskir
Thanks for the input. I did realize that I did not have the "latest" sound drivers. I am going to update it and see if it makes any difference (probably not though). I DO however have the latest Nvidia drivers installed. Below is the response I received from Lucas Arts Tech Support. When I contacted them, I did include a copy of my dr. watson error report and a copy of my dxdiag report. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, Thank you for your message. I would recommend that you go through the following: Programs running in the system tray can sometimes cause conflicts with DirectX games. These programs can also take up system resources which may need to be freed up for the application to run smoothly. The system tray runs on the side of the taskbar (the bar with the "START" button). These icons are programs that are running on your system, some of them loading at start up. Some of these programs can be shut down by right-clicking on the icon, and choose to Exit, Close, Suspend or Disable the program/utility. Other applications can only be shut down by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL to access the Windows Security screen. Click on the Task Manager option, choose the Applications tab, click on the program you want to close (one at a time), and click on the End Task button. Please note the CPU % usage listed at the bottom of the window as well as the Mem usage. The less CPU % usage and the less Mem usage, the more free system resources the game will have available for use. Try setting your Desktop to 640x480 or 800x600 on your Display Properties screen (right-click on the Windows desktop, choose Properties, and go up to the Settings tab and select 640x480 or 800x600 "screen area"), and choose High color (16 bit) before launching the game. You should also click the Advanced button here on the Settings tab, select the Troubleshooting tab, and make sure that the Hardware acceleration slider is set to Full for running 3D games. How much free space is available on your hard drive where the game is installed to and on your C drive if the game is installed to another drive? Right-click on the Drive's icon in the "My Computer" window, and select "Properties" to see the amount of Free Space on a drive. You should make sure that you have 100 MB or more of free space on your hard drive after the game has been installed for caching. Go to the Windows Start button and click on Settings and open the Control Panel. Double-click the Sounds & Multimedia Control Panel, and select the Audio tab. What is currently selected under the SOUND PLAYBACK: PREFERRED DEVICE drop down menu? Does selecting a different option here for the Preferred Sound Playback Device help to resolve the problem with the game? (Please be aware that you might need to reset this option before running other applications.) You should also try uninstalling the game using the shortcut to remove the program in the Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs screen and then reinstall it (perhaps using a different installation size, and/or install to a different directory) to see if this helps to resolve the problem.
