For those with military or aviation experince (Expecaly RedRussian!)

Recommended Posts

I know that RedRussian is in the Russian military and a pilot but I am wondering if any one else has served, or has any REAL (non computer:D ) flying experince?

Recently I have been concidering enlisting in the US Cost Guard, and perhaps becoming a helo pilot. If any one here as any advice on piloting please tell me.

RedRussian, if you could perhaps discribe any of the diffcultys in helo plioting I wold apprechate it. I already have a working knowge of aircraft from flight sims, so mabe your experinces in training would be helpfull.

Thanks.

First, if you want to become a helo pilot, you need to know a few things. You have to have a very good Math skills, and good reflex's. Its also very important to have 20/20 vision or better. The coast guard uses pretty heavy helos, so it will be harder than making small flights on smaller helo's, not to mention you will have to hover for like 10 min. You need to keep the craft steady on such missions, so that if very important. Coputer skills are needed, especially that you will likely fly a new helicopter replacing the old Dauphin helos soon. I think they are planning on using the S-76. I am not really sure. Making daily flights in flight sims is a good first step, but I will tell you this, its going to be very hard at first, even with flight sim experience. You will also fly low, so you really need to trust your eyes, and equipment to not run into the ground. This is called nap-of-the-earth flying I think in English. Well that it, ask more if you want.

Thanks for the info RedRussian and Roling Thunder. I have the refelxs and vision, my math skills are ok. That nap of the Earth flying is diffcult for any pilot. As for hovering I have read that the Dauphin can maintain a preset course alowing the pilot and navagtior to look around for people in trouble etc. I guess tonight I'll work on instment flying in Apache v Havioc, (I'll fly a pracice mission a night in the rain without night vision:D  )

I practiced some of that nap of the Earth flying last night in Apache v Havoic :D and well I didn't have to wash my landing gear after that mission (But my CP/G had to wash his underware!)!! I'm going to keep flying missions like that for a while and then try to land on the carriers at night with out night vision or FLIR.
