nattydred
Its not a patch its a game, and the game is great since the patch. Dueling is where this game breaks new ground. The game as it is now is awesome for dueling people.! Hear me now and understand me later. I just spent another entire day dueling, against people using all kinds of different styles. No one style dominated. It was truly awesome! I had to be agile and patient against DFA maniacs, and I learned what not to do and what to do against them. I had to watch out for guys trying to use the backstab. I learned to counter every type of attack and developed a few styles of my own. And more than one style with each (red , yellow, blue) attack type. I think its all skill now, no one style dominates. This is like no other gaming experience. Other games have tried to do swords, but this is a quantum leap ahead! Each player swings the light sabre in a different way. Even if they try to do one move over and over, no two players are exactly alike. I am having a blast and so are thousands of other force junkies like me. Learning to duel with a lightsaber is a s detailed and intricate as you want it to be. I dont see this getting old soon. This is the modern revival of the art of swordplay! Enjoy it
MrCrusher
Having played Heretic2 for some years I have a bit of a head start with this type of control system. I keep wondering what everyone is complaining about so I logon for a few minutes of play time and I'm once again convinced that this is now the best PC melee game ever released. My defense is where it should be, my attacks are deliberate and I use some real life fighting tactics. I hit about 3 out of 5 or better of my intented attacks. If my opponent does not know how to break down my defenses then he has lost the duel. The depth of play is incredible, and it will take a long time to master JO. It has some good legs to run on .....until the inevitable anouncement of JK3. The only thing I could see some improving on is the time waiting to duel on duel servers. I'm spoiled by the three arena format that I'm used to playing. This format allows duelist to be constantly fighting 1on1 with whom they choose. Maybe I'll do some FFA 1on1 three arena maps to speed things up.
nattydred
Right on man "depth of play" is exactly what I'm talking about. This is the game of the year and even more so since the patch.
smith
The autoblocking is pretty shoddy though. I watched someone repeatedly strike someone in the back and do negligible damage because of autoblock. The opponent was facing the wrong way, and THE POINT OF THE SABER WAS IN THE GUYS BACK, and still there was almost no damage. In this way at least, I preferred 1.02. When you hit someone, you did some actual damage. You had to BLOCK the hits by getting your saber between you and their saber. If autoblocking of that kind is going to be a feature, then IMHO it should be linked to the force power Saber Defence, and you should have to activate it manually. Just holding block would not lose you any force, but you would lose a small amount of force every time you block a blow. When you have no force left, you cannot autoblock. However, blocking just as an enemy is about to hit you should parry the blow, briefly leaving them open for a counterattack. Even without autoblock, you should still be able to try for a parry, and you should still be able to block blows by getting your saber between you and them. If you are not blocking when you are hit, then the damage should be comparable to 1.02. Otherwise, the damage would be similar to 1.
nattydred
Good points on auto blocking. I bet they will refine that a little further; you should at least have to be facing the attack for it to work. Saber vs. Saber 1 on 1 is still one of the greatest gaming "confrontations" I can think of. Maybe pitcher vs. batter would be a close second, or a 1 on 1 ww2 dogfight. Gimme a lightsaber anyday! MrCrusher
Smith, The opponent was facing the wrong way, and THE POINT OF THE SABER WAS IN THE GUYS BACK, and still there was almost no damage. In this way at least, I preferred 1.02. When you hit someone, you did some actual damage. You had to BLOCK the hits by getting your saber between you and their saber What you are seeing is the sabre passing all the way through the other player thus making contact with his sabre..... When you hit someone from behind or the side they take plenty of damage but you also see some attacks passing further through making contact with the other sabre ...thus the block animation. They are not blocking damage they are taking damage its just that the block is triggered when sabres connect. The idle sabre damage was toned down to reduce random kills but attack damage is ultimately the same. So just don't stand there HIT THEM!
nattydred
Ya! And may the force be with you! This game may be soured for a few, but the number of people getting hooked on dueling is growing rapidly. Someone said its the best melee combat game and i agree. What other game has the detail and variety of attacks? Usually its just click the attack button and let the computer handle the fight. This is so far beyond that and any other sword type combat game. ya all get on board and enjoy the ride!
SGT D
I will agree that 1.03 is 100% improved on dueling. No more 1 hit kills by DFA - you have to have actual skill.....with 1 exception... I have been on several duel servers where you see players just swinging wild and constant. There is no penalty because of the tuned-down sabre damage. It looks funny - like two 2-year olds swing wiffle ball bats at each other - but it works for them. No skill involved. Now, I pretty much suck at this game - I'm still learning - but I fight with more of a fencing attitude.....move/countermove....and the biggest problem I see are these "swing until my finger cramps up" players. I don't play FFA's for the same reason - I got tired of trying to fight sabre and getting killed by the spammer with the repeater or fletchette weapon. Now, it seems all you have to do is swing wild, and you have as much chance as anyone out there....... Just my 0.02 cents.....
MrCrusher
SGT D, I duel a lot like you do, with deliberation and intent. With the new patch I have yet met a random-button-masher that can beat me. Use evasion and defense against these youngters. They opening themselvse up continuously, so take advantage of that.
EekTheKat
I have been on several duel servers where you see players just swinging wild and constant. There is no penalty because of the tuned-down sabre damage. It looks funny - like two 2-year olds swing wiffle ball bats at each other - but it works for them. No skill involved. What I don't get is why do people see this as a problem? Would you rather see the random swinging hacking saber players score FULL DAMAGE on each wild and crazy hit? Getting full damage on a hit now actually takes more skill to score a clean hit. From my experience the random swinger players leave a *ton* of openings in their defense that you can capitalize on. Thanks to the better saber collision (note : NOT blocking) and interrupts that were put back into the game you now have more tools and a better chance of dealing with the random hack and slashers.
