Use the fx_runner and type

 

Example

 

Key: fxfile

Value: beam

 

Look up the efx files in assets0.pk3 and choose a beam effect to try out in your level. Do as above putting in the folder name such as /env/beam or bespin/beam. Whatever, the folder is.

 

You may also have to target it. To do this make another entity like a light, stormtrooper, info_notnull give it a targetname. Then in the fx_runner type

 

key: target

value: targetname of entity

 

Thats all there is to it!
