converting problems using 3dsmax

I've been playing about with the root.xsi models that come with the reference model package and when I just do a straight .xsi to .3ds and then .3ds to .xsi the carcass program doesn't recognise the .xsi format.

 

If I use the original file its fine!

 

Anybody else found this?

 

Also if this is the case how can I get the model into a usable format?
