IRQ Ignorance

So I go to a computer store to get a new USB interface device (to replace my current PCI network card) - cause I bought a TV tuner/video input card, and it always sharing IRQ's - there are only about 3 PCI slots on my MB that don't share IRQ's.

So well, it's a lie when you see a bunch of PCI slots on your MB. You might as well just not consider any that share an IRQ.

So if for example PCI 1 shares with 5 and you use 5, you might as well forget ever using 1. Or say PCI 4 shares with USB, if you use USB, you might as well forget PCI 4.

The following type card/bus type have problems sharing IRQ's:

Video, sound, network, capture cards, USB, etc. Basically most cards that use an IRQ.

The saleguy says he has all his computer slots full - everything works great, and I should update my computer's BIOS.

*SIGH*

Any computer tech will tell you never to share IRQ's on a hardware level (I'm not talking XP ACPI layers).

Anyhow, if your computer behaves choppy or freezes at times, check that IRQ sharing - don't depend on the OS, check manuals and FAQ's for your motherboard.

You don't need to disable ACPI - simply make sure, at the very hardware level, you aren't sharing IRQ's - and keep in mind, most motherboards have about 3-4 useful slots, if you are lucky.

Oh, and the USB network card did the trick (freed up and IRQ/slot). I now can use the TV Tuner/Video In card with no choppiness and conflicts - none of my cards are sharing IRQ's with anything else (on a hardware level) - imagine that!
