    • great article, I now agree that sabers must have a weighted blade (or always did, and you showed why in a great article)

In short in real life I could probably Burry you, both mentaly and physically...

this alone makes me disagree with you. I don't even really care about what you said, nor whether sabers have mass. I only know that I don't like you at all. Way to be persuasive there Newton.

idlemind,

i really dont have a clue as to what you're talking about, but whoever typed the statement you quoted is really really funny in that he spelled 'bury' burry and 'mentally' mentaly. when you are trying to say that you are smarter than others it would help to spell things correctly.

I wrote the bury thing heheh. I only tossed that stuff in there to keep trolls away... seems to have worked fairly well so far...

I'm not comparing myself to anyone in particular, or the people posting replies to this thread.

If idlemind knew me in real life he/she would have realized I meant that with the best of humor. However if a statement like that is enough to make some total stranger dislike me, well who cares, there are other fish in the sea.

However since this is the second complaint about that part of my orriginal post, I think I will edit it out now, it's causing more flames and trolls than I think it stopped LOL.

As far as my spelling goes, being able to spell only tells me that a person is well educated on that subject, not nescessarily intelligent.

If proper spelling and grammer was the true mark of inteligence as some people who post on threads like this think, then I would dare say we should all be slaves to our computers already because look at what they can do that we can't. Know what I mean?

So yeah please overlook my spelling, I understand sometimes even remotely improper spelling or grammer can make some people want to cry, but learn to deal with it... It's a fact of life...

I am at work so when I replied before I didn't have time to mention your idea.

Anyway If memory serves this style is VERY similar to aido (think it's aido).

In Japanese sword fighting, one school of through was almost like the cowboy "quickdraw" method.

It was highly effective for many many reasons. to me when combined with other styles this style is a GREAT addition to ones repitiour.

thus keeping your saber off in real life until the moment of use isn't too far fetched.

HOwEVER from what I can tell no sabers ignite like a flashlight, they all extend taking up to I think 3 full seconds in some cases. aparently the rate of extension is controlable since the same saber might extend or reatract at different speeds in the same movie.

However instant extraction?

I dunno about that... maybe you could do it fairly quickly... but I'm not sure on that. Might need to rewatch some films and do some research on that.

however again I would say that although it has a few minor holes, your overal idea for a style/technique isn't all that obscure or impractical. I wouldn't say it would dominate, but I am sure it would hold it's own like any other style.

All in all as I said a well rounded jedi would be foolish NOT to learn to use a similar technique to this.

It is deceptive, and effective.

I think of it this way, depending on the skill of my oponents in real life duels I sometimes assume a non ready stance.

Ie I lower my guard and keep my blade at my side... This is a deceptive guard because I am counting on them to attack. Using the right kinds of movements unless the oponent is better than me, this usualy works to cause my oponent to attack allowing my to parry block even use forms of hand to hand fighting to get my blade into a position to strike.

Again I would say in terms of using a saber or any melee weapon. to use ONLy the weapon would also be somewhat silly. The weapon is an extension of the body, which is an extension of the mind. Don't limit yourself to the blade alone. learn hand to hand techniques, and apply them to your fighting style.

also the fun thing I experience when teaching some newer students is, that they don't need to unlearn thier H2H styl;es to use weapons. instead incorporate them.

for example in a hand to hand form, rather than punching or sometimes even kicking use similar sword techniques.

A simplistic one would be something like this.

attacker swings at your left side. Block/deflect to the left and reverse swing to the neck/head. This would be like blocking to the left in hand to hand with your right hand, then backfisting your oponant in the temple.

If you think of things in this way, it is easy to see that hand to hand moves can for the most part be used with a weapon.

Grappling also. For example trap the enemies sword arm even for a second then butt the enemy in the face with your pommel, while keeping your leg behin them using your knee for leverage against th back of thier knee... they will probably fall over backwards opening them up to a downward stab...

This move however is hard to demonstrate with words... maybe one day I'll get some time and make some photos displaying some of these techniques.

Anyway thanks for the ideas about possible saber style aoshi. Was good reading :)

In response to the cutting down the door problem in Episode I, this might be a good answer. The saber doesn't heat the door to its melting point instantly. It takes time to heat up. For that reason, the saber is moved slowly not because it's too hard, but because it would be inefficient to move it faster. Moving it faster might cause the door to sort of stop the blade, in maybe the same way a wall stops your blade in JKII. This effect wouldn't last very long, as the saber would soon go through the door again, but it would last long enough so that moving the saber faster through the door would have no appreciable effect on speeding up the job.

  • 2 weeks later...

A lightsaber must have weight in the blade simply because of the way it is used. Period. Explain it technically any way you want. Things don't just exist for no reason, and if there was a more efficient manner of saber fighting than what we have seen in the movies it would obviously have been discovered in the thousands of years during which lightsabers had been used.

A lightsaber is a cutting weapon. In a cutting blade you want more mass near the tip, just as in a piercing/stabbing blade you want more mass near the hilt. If the lightsaber blade was weightless, the most nature and useful way to use it would be as a piercing weapon. However, this is not the primary method in which it is used.
