Getting RID of light (no not the entities...)

Well, I just started mapping having never done much at all. I really couldn't get on with qeRadiant - mainly because it wouldn't compile - so I downloaded GTKradiant.

When I compile my maps, everything is very bright - i think that every surface is emitting light... and I don't really want this. I have put no lights in my level.

I then took a chunk out of kejim_post and bsped that - it was completely dark. Therefore, I conclude that it is possible to have this lighting NOT on - how do I do this?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I couldn't find any tutorials on this since most of them say "Put some light entities in your level so you can see!". I don't want so much light.

Oh yeah also has anyone investigated the "Saga" gametype as it pertains to maps?

In the C:\Program Files\Lucasarts\Star Wars JK II Jedi Outcast\GameData\base\ui\jk2mp folder theres a file called gameinfo.txt. I opened this up to find a coupla gametypes not playable in the final game - GT_tournament and GT_saga. What is GT_saga? I assumed that it is some sort of team based play, so i can suggest trying adding imperial and rebel team spawnpoints and seeing if it will work with that selected.

Anyway. help, please?

On the same topic (almost) can we please have a pool of tutorials specifically for JK2 editing - I have all the knowledge (not including mapping stuff) I have at http://www.imperial-center.co.uk/jk2.htm if theres anyone around collecting stuff - I have worked out a few things that I want to share, eg. where files are and how dynamic music works.

If you have ABSOLUTLY NO lights in your level the compile prossess will light everything up SO YOU CAN SEE. The piece of Yavin you compiled probably had a bit of light somewhere, hence everything else was dark. If you put one light entity in your level the rest of the level will be dark. If you realy realy realy hate light (and lets face it, what self respecting games freak doesn't) make a box outside your level space and put a light in that (If you don't put a box around the light you'll get a leak error as the light entity will be in the void) OR you could try putting in a light entity and setting it's brightness to '0' or if it won't do that then '1' as that will be practicly the same thing.

Good Luck and try to apply a little common sence to your problem next time rather than posting as you will likely get nothing but flames for your (lazy) efforts.

Actually, you're half right. It all depends on the compile method you choose. If the compile option includes the light stage (like fast vis or full vis), it will calculate lighting. If you have no light sources, your map will be completely dark. If you use a compile option that doesn't have the light stage (fastvis (nolight), fullvis (nolight), etc), the lighting will default to 'fullbright', where all the textures are extremely bright, and there are no shadows or lighting effects.

Hope that clears things up.

*edit*

I just finished reading Machine's posts... No need to be so ignorant and harsh, man. It's a newbie question, sure, but everyone starts out somewhere.

Oh, and next time you want to call someone lazy, try getting your facts straight.

Errr...

My last mapping experience was Counter-strike, on the official counter stirike boards it's pretty rough, so by their standards what I said was extremly mild. :D I assumed that there would soon be posts along the lines of

'read the sticky BEEHATCH'

or

'CHRIST noobville, noobton, nooblige must be a dark and lonely place'

So I kinda thought I was protecting the guy....

I was wrong, applying an old mind-set to a new situation. I just didn't know you guys were so nice :)

In my defence however I was the only (first?) person to give a constuctive (If critical) reply to the question posted

Never the less, sorry to all offended

And thanks for the welcome, seems like a nice place, I might just hang around a while....

mmmAntillies If there is no light in a map the HALF-LIFE compile tools will not run vis. As I said I was a counter-strike mapper..... Again though I'm applying old an mindset to a present situation and assuming it will work.
