Tigris
Ok, now I read some basic stuff about area portals, BUT can they only be used in doors or how does JK2 use them? I aam thinking about using them in windows too, but before trying I wanted to know if you still can look through it (or if not what the distance needs to be that you can look through it). Pseudopath
My understanding of them suggests that they be in a "solid" i.e. door or window. This prevents the engine from rendering them until the player can "see" through i.e. when the door opens or the window is in view and not behind the player. You should test it by putting them in and then checking your fps. Hope that helps. - Pseudopath.
UniKorn
You cannot use them in windows. Unless you don't wan't to render what is behind the window. But then what is the use of your window

UniKorn
Let me explain. An areaportal can be seen as a temporary portal between 2 nodes. When the door is closed, the portal is not used, and the stuff behind the door is not rendered. When the door is open the portal is used, and the node behind the door is drawn. If you don't put your areaportal between structural brushes => you will use another portal that is connected to the same nodes => you will see the stuff behind the door. Pseudopath
Thanks, I see what you mean now. The door movement acts like a trigger... Also can you tell me how to locate a specific area portal/brush, I have two that dont touch 2 areas.... Thanks. - Pseudopath. PS if you in the mood I would appreciate your help here :- http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56460 thx
fabrikashon
There can be no leak/gaps in the area you want to block off with doors, area portals return as an error when this occurs.
Tigris
I heard that about the trigger too- say, can you activate it with a trigger? Could improve the framerates quite a bit if that would be possible!
Cmdr. Antilles
Doors trigger areaportals. Nothing else. You could always trigger your door, though.
Tigris
Ok, thanks for the info... *goes back to chaulking walls in the cantina*
UniKorn
caulking And a good technique is to build everything in caulk and afterwards apply textures to the faces you can see, saves you a lot of work.
fabrikashon
Caution needs to be taken when caulking a map. Going to bed and closing your eyes, only to see a pink gradiant with the words 'Caulk' and 'Caulk' (mirrored) isn't a pleasant thing to live with! Cmdr. Antilles
I build that way. And yes I often have horibble 'caulk nighmares'
Tigris
Well, I didn't and now I have a streak of light right in the middle of my cantina- light that shines through solid walls! So I'm now chaulking again...

Pvt:Hudson
"May the caulk be with you" NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BTW is your caulk texture gold or some other colour cause I used to have some other coloured caulk, but now it's just plain gold Can't remember how they changed tho... I do have 3 game editing sections to my Gtk install so maybe it's just a different game's take on the caulkness. Well I'm off to sort myself out as I've just realised I've made an entire post on nothing but caulk... please help me..
UniKorn
The gold one is from medal of honor mapping I think.
