alienprotein
Hey there fine people of the Lucasforums. I have a dedicated win32 1.03 server running, and was wondering how other 128k (upload) ADSL'ers had their servers setup (Config) I have been getting people connecting to me from all over the globe (Joy), and would like to reduce the client lag, if at all possible. Some people are connecting with a ping of 96 to 180. It seems fine, but some complain that it is a bit choppy. I will have to assume that they are referring to, maybe, FPS? Could this be the result of my servers FPS being too high. If so, what would be a good recommendation for FPS? Can I assume also that I can get better performance with the smaller maps? I.e. (close combat Duel maps) I will end here for now. But any information would be greatly appreciated. alienprotein
Does this relate to my previous post. I keep getting an error when Clients, and myself connect saying CG_ReadNextSnapshot: Way out of range, 16637 >44 (playername) What does this mean, and what is causing it. I'd set the following in my config file sv_maxrate 3000 sv_maxclients 8 sv_maxping 300 When they say it's choppy that could be either fps or ping. But most likely it's the ping. I'm not so sure smaller maps would make much difference. Unless of course whatever users connect to you are all running crappy systems, then maybe... but I doubt it's the source of they're complaint. ON a 128k ADSL line my bet is the latency is kinda bad. Are you running the server on the same machine as your game machine? If so that will really slow things down also. alienprotein
I'd set the following in my config file sv_maxrate 3000 sv_maxclients 8 sv_maxping 300 KnightHawk420 thanks fer da info. ^ Do you think 128k(up) ADSL can support up to 8 clients? I had 5 on last night (average ping 145), and they seemed to have no problems, except when I changed map to devmap (map name). Dbl sabers are a fun change once in a while. But I don't think it too good of an idea in a FFA match. Here is something else I curious about. Say I have clients connecting from Europe (approximately 20 to 30 hops out). And say there are 3 European clients, and 3 Local clients (less then 10 hops out) connected in a FFA or Duel match. Will there heightened latency cause clients who are closer to the server any lag or bog out the server on the upload side? Are you running the server on the same machine as your game machine? If so that will really slow things down also. Only once in a while does my Roommate (who owns the box) play on that box. Usually it is a Dedicated Server Only!! KnightHawk420
Well if you wanted to be sure that it wouldn't lag at all, then I"d probably recommend 4 or less. 8 is pushing it a bit. I'm not so sure that lagging players can slow the server down, but it sure does suck to fight against players who are lagging. It may make everyone else think the server is lagging. I will have to assume that they are referring to, maybe, FPS? I can assure you its not your fps. My server is running off a p2 -333 with a gf2 MX and i pull about 20-30 frames on any map. I didn't bother tweaking anything since its not my game rig. but people connect and have no problems. It could be a matter of packetloss. thats probably why people are saying its so choppy. i got rid of my 728k/128k dsl a few months ago just cause the packetloss was horrible. checkout DSL Reports . they have some tools that will be of some help to you.
