Windows XP Problem

Hello,

I just got Windows XP Professional installed to my system and installed JK2. I cannot get it the game to run under the normal start up but I can play under safe mode. My system is an AMD XP 1600. Asus A7A 266 with 256Mb 2100 DDR. Radeon 8500 running 6.13.10.6071 drivers. SoundBlaster Live Value. Windows XP with all updates applied. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it...

Are you kidding? I have Windows XP and it simply rocks man.. Not even a hitch after everything I throw at it (and it is a lot, I can tell).. I have had ZERO BSOD since I installed Windows XP, only twice an old game crashed to the desktop (but the system remained cool). You are only likely to have problems with XP running legacy software (when I say legacy I mean several years old), and nothing too serious. Certainly not with a new game like JK2 (even if the engine is imported from a game 2 years old).

If you have a problem with normal mode but you can play in safe mode, then it must be a problem with either the graphics card or sound card driver.. Try to get different versions of the drivers, uninstalling all instances of the drivers first. If that doesn't work, run the game in safe mode and disable all features/lower all settings to minimum.. then try to run in normal mode again. There are certain options that might help:

- Disabling opengl extensions

- Switching shadows to everything but volumetric.

- Sound driver to directsound, not EAX..

You get the idea..

I am also running Win XP Pro on a PIII 733 w/512MB PC800 RDRAM. The game runs better than on any of the 98 or 2000 machines of comparable hardware I've tried. I strongly agree that XP is an awesome OS for gamers, if you tweek it right.

I agree that your problem is likely a video driver or sound card issue. I found, from my own tweeking of XP, that the XP provided drivers for the SB Live! Value, honestly, are not as good as the XP drivers available at the SBLive.com site. Finding the latest drivers for your ATI video card from the manufacturer web site is the best idea also, in case you haven't already done that.

Are you running an English version of XP Pro? If not, that might be a factor also. I think I read in some requirements doc somewhere that the English version is required, others are unsupported. That doesn't mean it won't work with other languages, but it might be a posible problem. I'd think you could still work around that also tho.

As the game goes, I would say, start it up, go into settings, and set your video to the "recommended" settings. Run the game that way, and see how it works. If it works well, notch up the settings (like resolution, etc) one notch at a time, until you see some performance degredation in rooms with a lot to render. When you see a performance hit, notch it back one.

There are also several JK2 tweek guides, and Gamespot.com has a really good XP Gaming tweek guide in their Gamespot Hardware section. You might find some good clues there also.

One thing to triple check, that is mentioned in the above mentioned Gamespot guide, Open Control Panel, click on "Show Classic View" in the left pane, then open the System Icon. Go to the Advanced Tab. Click on "Performance." Make sure that processor and memory use are both set to be optimized for applications, and NOT background apps. Also, make sure that Windows is managing your page file, or else manually set your swap file to at least 1.5 of your system RAM, if not double. Either of these tweeks will require a reboot.

Oh, and be sure to disable virus scanners during the game, and exit out any absolutely unneeded programs in your system tray. Stuff like the Real Player Start Center, etc, take up a bucketload of system resources. I only have Norton Internet Security running when I'm playing JK2. I turn off everything else. If you have to do a CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Task Manager, and manually kill a few of the processes that pop up those task tray icons, do it. And while you're in there, take a peak at your performance tab. It'll tell you your CPU and Memory usage at that state, which should be idle. It'll give you an idea of the baseline that JK2 is working above. Close apps to minimize this.

Sorry for being so long winded. Good luck!

im running win xp and it rocks..

win xp has memory protection there is NO NEED to disable other running programs before running jediknight unless you are short on memory.

are you trying to run jediknight as a USER or an ADMINISTRATOR?

make sure your account is an administrator account.

I do believe that everyone I know who has an AMD Athlon is having issues running JK2.

Not me, i got an Athlong 1.33gig coupled with a Geforce 3 TI200 and JKII is running smooth as silk.

Haven't had a single problem.

Actually, the reason for disabling/unloading other system tray programs is not because of memory leakage. I won't dispute the vast and awesome advances in memory protection in XP. The reason is to free up memory (yes, in low memory systems) if needed, as well as to stop unnecessary programs from using CPU ticks when they really aren't doing anything other than taking ticks away from JK2. Try it, you might like it.

Two ppl posted something about possible issues running JK2 with a Windows XP version different than english, or Athlon processors..

I have an Athlon processor, running on a Windows XP Pro system (spanish version).. and the game is running awesome with a lowly kyro II card.. (1024x768 @ 70-80 fps, most options turned on/high settings)
