Darth Maul Attacks

hey,

i really want to take what ive learnt so far from messing around with some basic maps and semi re-create a scene from episode 1.

im going to do the one where darth maul makes his first appearance to the jedis. one side of the map will have the silver ship and then there will be some rocks and qui-gon and darth maul will fight and near them will be the sith speeder (hopefully bobbing in mid air).

i know it doesnt seem like much but i just want to start with a small map with a couple of prefab models and some sandy dunes and hills.

i thought id start working on the sith speeder as i usually just mess around with the terrain most other times. i have a couple of images from the movie as well as schematic looking images from the starwars.com databank. the trouble is that i dont know how to make a semi circle like on the bottom of the speeder. in fact, i dont really know how to do much besides make walls and stuff like that.

ive gone through a few tutorials on door arches and patch meshes but nothing i do seems to turn out right. if anyone can point me in the right direction, id really appreciate it.

one important scaling question i cant seem to find anywhere, is how many pixels or whatever to a metre. eg, i think a player is about 64 to 80 pixels high? maybe 40 pixels wide or something. i know that the sith speeder is about 1.8 metres or around 6 foot long, so how many pixels is that?

thanks

If my memory serves me, I think I remember hearing one of the guys from ID saying that in all the Quake games 8 game units were about one foot in the real world... although this seems wrong since stairs can be 16 units high, and that doesn't look like two feet... but that's just what I remember.

thanks for the replies. while im waiting to find some info about making a solid semi circle thing, i was messing around with a little map and i took the glass break and wind trigger push stuff out of the ladder map to see if i could make a wind tunnel that pushed the player into a room when they broke the glass.

basically, i made my own 9 sided brush glass in a 9 sided brush tunnel. i named it the same targetname etc as in ladder and copied all the other appropriate files (i think) to my map.

however, when i break the glass, i dont get pushed. it seems like something is not being activated? any clues?

the map is at:

i havent textured anything besides the glass and the trigger and stuff. basically you start on this lil platform, break the glass, walk through, break the next glass and ur supposed to get flung into the next room. if anyone can have a look and let me know what im doing wrong, it would be great :D

hey,

here is my WIP of that single player level i mentioned. the one with the wind tunnel. i wont be making that tunnel the wind tunnel but it would really help for another section of the map if i can get it working.

if someone could please download that basic map and check out the wind triggers and stuff, id appreciate it.

any comments and/or ideas for that map would be appreciated. at the moment, im starting on the bobbing platform but i think ill change it. the idea is that you have infiltrated an imperial base so you wouldnt just start on a platform :D

It's very easy to do a semi circle (Or just about anything else) with a patch mesh.

Draw your mesh, I'd recommend going with something like 5 by 5, though you could get away with 3 by 3, anything more is overkill.

Leave one side flat, hit v and bring the other side out to a circle.

If you mean a half sphere use a cone, again use the vertice/vertex tool and bring the nose down on a low grid setting (2-4).

As for getting knocked out, you have a push entity and a target defined?

  • 2 weeks later...

apologies if this keeps appearing then changing. i thought i could make an ascii sort of diagram but it didnt work so ive just linked the image.

hubris: thanks for your help. from what you said, i worked out how to make a sphere but what im trying to make is more like half a tyre if that makes sense. see the little diagram bellow. its gotta be curved though.

it could be too complex for me to even try. ive done a few patch mesh tutorials but its more for terrain or arches.

anyone got any feedback for my screenshot?

thanks for the offer lime-light,

it would be cool if you could make the md3, the only problem i can see is that my map will basically be sand, 3 rocks, the speeder (you make) and the silver ship and a couple of spawned npc's. if i cant make the prefabs or md3 of the speeder and ship myself then i dont know if this level should be made by me?

its up to you though, if you wanna make the speeder, ill work out how to make it bob up and down in the game and that can be something useful i have done haha

anyways, let me know :)
