A Player's Plea to Map Makers: No Music, No Hidden Files

You can't always go into the .pk3 and delete the file. If pure server is on, and the server hasn't deleted the music, then the server will detect that the .pk3 file is a different size and will try to make the user download the new one.

I like my two .pk3 idea, and thats what I'm probably what I'm gonna use when I make a MP mission. For now, concentrate on SP do I.

good call on the pure server thing, didnt think about that. people should really consider what the music adds before implementing it. on the mods thing, i totally agree. if i wanted a new saber hilt, i would have downloaded one.

Yikes, yes, let's avoid the legal discussion here. I seem to remember a JK1 mod called Spork that had a Duel of the Fates mod with music. Never heard of Lucas complaining. And, yeah, putting music in a separate file could be handy.

But may be there are other answers, though many would require a mod that might not work on pure servers:

1) In-game MP3 player like in Quake 3 Rocket Arena.

2) Pointers to a song in the map with an option to create your own external playlist. I know if you don't have a song you'll get that annoying "music file not found" error, but it's not a gamestopper. But a pure server killer, though.

3)The coolest thing would be to somehow implement Dynamic Music in multiplayer. Triggers for when you're just observing the duel (anticipatory or somber music), then something exciting kicks in when you come up for your turn picked from a number of different tracks so it's not the same thing over and over. AND what if all these tracks are yanked right from the single player game, thus averting any legal issues?

Yeah, wishful thinking.

Ok, let me set this legal battle crap straight. (clears throat)Ok, as you know, copyright is there to protect from illegal selling of anything, so, putting music in a map and distributing it without charging the recipient is TOTALLY LEGAL, so go ahead and put in music because its not illegal as jipe thinks it is :fett::atat::D

Actually, it is illegal as it really does violate the EULA.

(4) MODs must not contain any illegal, scandalous, illicit, defamatory, libelous, or objectionable material (as may be determined by LEC in its sole discretion), or any material that infringes any trademarks, copyrights, protected works, publicity, proprietary, or other rights of any third party, or of LEC.

Copyright infringement, but who cares.

No, Spork did not have any music. I also doubt that there was such a mod, because Massassi.net (*the* JK community.. there was nothing else) would have taken it down for violating the EULA. So, even if there was one, it wouldn't have been widely distributed.

Just because you won't get caught is no excuse to break rules.

No, you are wrong. Putting copyrighted music in a map without permission is illegal. Why do you think the RIAA has been so strong against Napster? No one pays to download the music, yet they still want it shut down. Why do you think?

It's the same way with IP (if you don't know what that is, don't even bother arguing with me) - look at Bid for Power, AliensQuake, etc. They all get shut down, and they're *free* mods. I'd advise getting your facts straight before trying to deprove someone else.

In keeping with a FRIENDLY debate (though we seem to be teetering on the brink here):

After some quick research I find that you are both right and wrong about Spork. It DID exist. It was widely distributed. It DID play the Duel of the Fates music when you played the map. BUT you were required to have original Phantom Menace (and not the extended version) soundtrack in your CD drive to hear it. JK1 played all its music through the CD and the Spork guys were clever enough to put a pointer to the correct track in their mod. This, of course, avoided any legal problems with the situation.

I just re-read my post and noticed I was unclear. I had deleted a sentence that suggested you might be referring to another mod, not Spork, so "I also doubt that there was such a mod" was meant to an alternative mod that might have included DotF. Spork was certainly widely distributed (and fun to play!), and indeed the workaround was clever. This could be used well for JO, as you previously mentioned. The dynamic music thing sounds very cool, although we'll have to wait for the SDK.

I didn't want to turn this into a copyright debate, I just got out of hand. Anyways, there's really no way to regulate music, etc. in levels so whatever happens, happens. Just try to avoid unnecessarily large file sizes and things will be fine.

This is interesting.

A good mapper who respects himself and his work releases his projects with a good balance. As close as his original vision can get, while at the same time keeping the download to a reasonable size. If his vision requires a certain piece of music to make the overall feel of the map, then so be it. None of you have any right to command map makers how to release their maps.

Me for example, I'm not concerned whether or not you want to download every single duel map avaliable. I just want some people to share my vision of map-making, and if it requires a big download to do that, you can't stop me. This should go for all "big-scale" projects, like movie setting recreations. Other maps, like simple maps or maps for pure fun can be more economical :).
