VIO
ok besides caulking how do i mprove my framerates? i have a smallish duel map with cracked pillers to wich i subtracted chunks out of to make them look old but this results in crapy frame rates (40 at the most). I don't know is 40 enough (pent III 660 geforce 2)? what should i try and have? and how can i improve the numbers and what is an area portal? Xcom
There were quite a few threads about how to improve FPS. I guess you have to search for them. areaportals can control how your map is being drawn. It only works in combination with doors (however I just discovered that it also works with other entities in SP player but that involves scripting so nevermind that). Supposes you have a big sealed room with a door. This doors is leading to a corridor. What you do is create a thin brush (1-2 gameunits thick), apply system/areaportal texture to it and place it directly in the door. This brush must totally cover the doorway so there should n't be any holes between the room and the corridor (and other spaces btw) or it won't work. This is basically it. In the game, when you are standing in the corridor the room won't be rendered (w/o areaportal it would), hence FPS improvement.

Xcom
Caulk alone may not improve your framerate per se. It depend on your brushwork. Actually, everything depends on it. Anyway, VIS blocking is important. Try to avoid the situation where huge areas of your map are being drawn in player's view. You can enable wireframe mode (/r_showtris 1) to actually see what is being rendered. If your map is an open map than there isn't much you can do about it. Use simple® textures. Avoid using fancy animated, reflective, glowing stuff. Align brushes to grid (if not already).
