Game plays, but screen is black?

My friend just bought the game, and we were looking forward to tyring it multiplayer. When he tried to run the game, however, all he'd get was a black screen. He could hear the music playing, and using the keyboard, we managed to cycle through the menu items and exit the game. I tried searching through this forum for any posts on similar problems, but after reading through the last twenty days worth of posts, I came up empty. We added the patch, we rechecked his drivers to make sure they were current, still no good.

 

He's running the game on a P4 with a Geforce 2 card on Windows 98. Beyond that, I don't know any more about his system specs other than that he exceeds the minimum requirements.
