Darth Facism
I was reading Dark Empire II last night, and man it was kind of bad in many areas. The "books" seem to do a better job of story telling than the comics. The comics seem to have a formula they follow. For example "the monster of the week formula" like the Emperor making the super weapon of the day to kill the Alliance. In Dark Empire II jedi's were flowing lol, dark and light , Luke and Leia were picking them up in there travels. The Emperor is promoting dark jedi like boyscouts. Boba Fett gets his helmet removed by chewie, then he has a back up at his ship. That made me laugh . Dark Empire was good, after that it went down hill from there. Jedi_Monk
Superweapon of the week formula? Have you read any of Kevin J. Anderson's books? In his Jedi Academy Trilogy, you have the Death Star Prototype and the Suncrusher (a fighter-sized ship that can destroy entire solar systems and has invincible shielding, of course); in his Darksaber novel he had the Dark Saber, a cylindrical superlaser built by the Hutts (of course). Superweapons abound in Star Wars novels, even Zahn has his cloaking shield. In The New Rebellion, the superweapons are exploding droids (dear gud!). The Star Wars novels are pathetic; the human element is gone in favor of cheap sci-fi and crappy knock-offs. There's not an original bone in any of these authors' bodies. I enjoy Dark Empire I, didn't much like Dark Empire II--but about three Star Wars comics comes out every month! The Tales of the Jedi series (The Golden Age of the Sith, TotJ, Dark Lords of the Sith, The Sith War and Redemption) are incredible! They have that mythic element that makes Star Wars Star Wars (which the books don't have). The Dark Lords of the Sith are like pharaohs, standing over the Sith people as their gods--sorcerors, warlords, satanic priests who use cunning magick to augment their powers in the Force. They practice alchemy to mutate their followers to create a Dark Army. It has the magnitude and the internal struggle--everything a SW book should be. That's just my favorite series. My look at it is, if the book was good enough, then they'll make a comic of it. Note, please, that I am an avid reader and enjoy the classics. In my top five favorite books list is Fahrenheit 452, Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice. I'm not going to waste my time with SW books. The comics are easier to read, visually stunning, contain excelent storylines and are, in a nutshell, better.
