SunBurN
The problem I'm having is low FPS. I pretty much have the map finished but would really like to raise the FPS a bit before I release it. In a few areas I get in the single digits (this is on a P3 800 with a 32mb DDR gforce 1 with 512mb of standard PC133 ram). When I try it on mine (AMD 1.5ghz Gforce 2 64mb DDR 256mb DDR Ram) I have no problems with FPS at all. They stay between (at lowest) 30's up to 80's - 90's. I've used caulk on all areas that don't show in the game, and I've heard of "hint brushes" that might be a better choice than caulk, but I don't know what they are or if I can use them at this point. Just to make things clear, MP JK2radiant Location: Hoth I welcome any and all advice, Thanks! SunBurN
Xcom
30 FPS on 64 MB GF. Man, that's like sucks. Try to imagine what I will get on my 16 MB Riva TNT. Anyway, it all depends. No1 can tell you whether you can or cannot use hint brushes w/o actually looking at the map. I remember Rich posted a link to a nice hint tutorial (Hopefully he'd do it again cuz I forgot the URL ) What you can do is a) enable r_speeds (in the console: /r_speeds 1) b) go to the area in your map where the framerate is low c) make a screenshot and post it here Maybe it will show something interesting. RichDiesal
Bleh. It's for RTCW, but the concepts are the same. http://www.nibsworld.com/rtcw/tutorial_detail_and_hint_brushes_part1.shtml
SunBurN
Thanks! I read the tutorials from nibs and FPS about detail and hint brushes and I think both will work out well....I just have to try them! I'll let you know how this progresses. Btw, I would've posted ss, but I don't have anywhere to post them. I may send my map to jedioutcastmaps.com in the beta section, so they can put up a ss or two. But I want to try these methods out first and see if they help. Thanks again! SunBurN
SunBurN
ok, that definitely helped! I only did two areas(one large, one small) from my map (with detail brush) and after compiling it and loading it in JK2, I noticed the r_speed tris stayed down between 3000 and 5000 as opposed to 12,000 and above before I put in the detail brushes. I also noticed that areas where (tested on this comp a p3 800 gforce 32mb 256mbram) FPS were in the single digits in this particular areas, now they're between 20 - 30 fps so also a definite improvment! I think once I'm finished making the detail brushes, I'll put in a few hint brushes and that should do it! I'll continue to update my progress for those of you who are curious about the actual affects of detail and hint brushes! One more thing, those tutorials on detail and hint brushes should be a must read for all mappers! Great information that produces great results. NOw if I only had permission to put this Civilian (Rage/Cornell collboration) song that I'm listening to in my map! SunBurN
SunBurN
Ok, I have a question about detail brushes. As I understand it, a detail brush cannot be a structural brush for one of the outside walls into the "void" otherwise it will cause a "leak". My question is, can detail brushes touch those structural brushes that touch the void?
RichDiesal
Yup. They most likely will touch structural brushes, actually.
SunBurN
Ok, so as long as they (detail brushes) don't pass through the structural/void brush..then it's ok to touch them?
RichDiesal
Yes, yes! Did you read the page on detail brushes or not? It fully explains that. As long as your map is completely sealed off from the void by structural brushes, it doesn't matter (at least in terms of leaks) what's inside. SunBurN
ok I was just making sure..and yes I've read the tuts several times now...it definitely helped the FPS and r_speeds in my map! Thanks for all of your advice and help!
