Vestril
I think it's a good series, it has corrected many of the issues of the previous books. The largest of which I only came to realize recently when Monk complained about how Star Wars EU was purely science fiction, that it lacked the spiritual and epic tastes. I think in a huge way the NJO revamps the series, takes it to an epic level. It has symbolism, and in many cases deep meaning, but it also holds to the Science fiction elements. I think one of the problems with the Prequals is that they focus very deeply on the spiritual, deep and philosoiphical aspects, and lose much of the raw Sci-Fi appeal of the OT. I like them, and honestly as much as the originals, but I think that that appeal isn't there for all. It seems to me that the NJO strikes a nice balance, and keeps very well the tradition of the Original Star Wars Trilogy.
JoelStoklosa
I have not read NJO series but I play the roleplaying game and it pretty much has the whole story(25,000 years before the battle of yavin to 21 years after endor)Its a very dark story cause when the Yuuzhan Vong invades,It threatens the core of the galaxy! RoyalGuard
The NJO books are very well written and the story arc is immensely enjoyable. The fact that almost any character could now be killed adds a bit of spice to the mix, and the individual authors all updating their characters from earlier novels adds good continuity. The vong also make excellent bad guys, and provide that spiritual element missing from many of the former books.
AgentSmith
I think the NJO is a good series, though I haven't been able yet to read any of the newer books. (I still have to read 'Rebirth', 'Star by Star', and so on.) I like them a lot, they're well balanced in combining the OT characters and the EU characters. They don't reference much to the new Trilogy (EP I & Ep II) though, but that's ok. I did observe that this time though tragedies keep on happening, the New Republic keeps on losing. Maybe that'll be different in the newer NJO books. I just feel they can't keep on losing battles and friends/important characters without totally abonding hope or for some Jedi fully turning to the Dark Side. I myself started writing a Fan Fiction story in the NJO era, nothing fancy just some characters I came up with that are thrown into the mix of the NJO characters and events. Plus I thought the Yuuzhan Vong are indeed bad asses, but as Qui-Gon Jin said 'There's always a bigger fish' so I thought and get something that could 'hunt the hunters'. Hehehehe. Something the Yuuzhan Vong are even scared of. What I do find regrettable is that I read from interviews with the NJO novel authors from celebration II that the reason Anakin Skywalker was killed off is because George Lucas thought it would be too confusing for people to have 2 Anakins. (Even if it's in a different time, and movies compared to books.) That just seems like a stupid reason.

AgentSmith
I think they're at about 14 books or so, some 19 or 20 are planned before the series will end. You can find all the titles at starwars.com.
