noaxark
I mean, I doubt Yoda said to all his padawans: "Yo papa you must slice and dice. Then a jedi you will be"...
Jubatus
I'm pretty sure he tells Luke to confront Vader, not to necessarily fight him, before becoming a Jedi. Facing up to his corrupted father and controlling the emotions this confrontation will bring about is the final test for Luke. I'm guessing the lack of a Jedi councel and the urgency of time makes this confrontation a substitute for the traditional trial of a Padawan ascending to knighthood. noaxark
well, remember that Luke says that he can't kill his father and then obi wan or yoda says something like "Then all is lost"... which means that they want him to kill vader, right? Jubatus
But Obi-Wan also tells Luke that Vader 'killed' his father in the essence that Anakin was turned to the dark side and became Vader. Following that rationale Luke will have to 'kill' Vader, not Anakin. And Luke does appeal to the remnant of goodness within Vader throughout the final confrontation. And Anakin wins in the end as evident by his slaying of the emperor and joining with Yoda and Obi-Wan. So in effect, as to Obi-Wans point of view, Vader was killed by Luke and Anakin together. It was a test of his skill (obviously) and it was a test of his comitment to the Jedi order (to see if he could face his own father without turning to the darkside, like he did in the cave). igor
Luke confronting Vader was like his version of the jedi trials.
Absath
and keep in mind that he did actually confront him first. he didnt run in screaming at the top of his lungs and swinging frantically. he actually turned himself in, let himself be captured and gave up his lightsaber to get close enough to confront Vader, to try and turn him back. it was only later, at the emporer's mocking, was luke forced to fight vader. -Abs
obi
I think he had to confront vader because Yoda, Obi-wan and Vader had a bet goin. Obi-wan ond Yoda bet Vader 50 bucks that Luke would face him, and Vader counter-betted and said he wouldnt. Thats why Yoda and Obi-wan wanted them to go to vader. And when he did, Vader realized he lost 50 Bucks over this kid, and was furious. :D
Obi-Doo
"To know the ligth, you must see the dark..." And what is a better example of the dark side than Vader? Ok, maybe Palpantine is, but no one can stand looking at him, so they really dont see the dark.
